***Check out Coach Hamilton’s video interview on YouTube. see the link in our bio. ***. Located in the heart of the Ohio Valley in Wheeling, West Virginia, Wheeling University is a private Catholic university known for its personalized education, strong sense of community, and commitment to leadership and service. The university enrolls approximately 775 students from across the United States and around the world, creating a close-knit campus environment with an 11:1 student-to-faculty ratio and small class sizes that allow students to thrive academically and athletically. Wheeling is especially recognized for standout programs in Nursing, Business Administration, Athletic Training, and its nationally respected Doctor of Physical Therapy program.

Wheeling University Rugby has rapidly become one of the premier collegiate rugby programs in the country. The men’s program, now led by Head Coach Maxwell Hamilton with longtime men’s rugby program builder Mike Geibel, now serving as the women’s rugby head coach. Together, they have established a national dynasty by winning back-to-back Collegiate Rugby Championship (CRC) National 7’s titles and competing among the elite programs in National Collegiate Rugby. In the 2025-2026 season, the Cardinals achieved a historic third consecutive national championship under Hamilton’s leadership, continuing the winning culture Geibel helped build.

The women’s rugby program has also experienced tremendous success in a short period of time. Since becoming a varsity sport, the Cardinals have quickly emerged as a national contender, highlighted by winning the National Collegiate Rugby Women’s Division I 15’s National Championship and earning recognition from the West Virginia Legislature for their achievements. Wheeling’s investment in both men’s and women’s rugby reflects the university’s commitment to providing elite athletic opportunities while developing student-athletes who excel in the classroom and in competition.

Did you know that each year, over 400 talented rugby players are released from academies and many of them never play high level rugby again. It doesn’t have to be that way.

In fact, many international rugby players choose playing US college rugby in an effort to overcome an obstacle…release from an academy, a coach that didn’t believe in them, or grades that don’t get them into their dream uni.

While some athletes choose to hang up their boots, others opt for a fresh start in the US where their experience, talent, and rugby culture is greatly valued.

Could US collegiate rugby be the fresh start you need? If you’d like to learn more, go to the Calendly link in the bio to book a free session for you and your parents.

In US college rugby, CRAA and NCR are the two main governing organizations that oversee collegiate competition, but they differ in structure, competitive focus, and membership. College Rugby Association of America (CRAA) is affiliated with USA Rugby and is more closely aligned with traditional pathways connected to elite rugby development. Historically, it has included many larger university programs competing at the highest levels, including the elite Division I-A. It tends to emphasize 15s and national championship structures tied to high-performance rugby and relationships with governing bodies such as USA Rugby. In contrast, National Collegiate Rugby (NCR) focuses heavily on broad participation, student-centered governance, and large-scale championship events across divisions and formats. It offers distinct 15s and 7s seasons. NCR has grown rapidly by offering extensive competition opportunities, strong event organization, and greater operational independence from USA Rugby. While both organizations run national championships and support men’s and women’s rugby, schools generally choose affiliation based on competitive level, philosophy, costs, and the type of collegiate rugby experience they want to provide.

Southern Nazarene University (SNU) is a private Christian liberal arts university in Bethany, Oklahoma, just west of Oklahoma City. Founded in 1899 with the mission embodied in its motto “Character, Culture, Christ,” the school emphasizes academic excellence, spiritual development, and community engagement. The suburban campus spans about 200 acres and supports an enrollment of roughly 2,110 students across undergraduate and graduate programs, offering more than 40 majors in areas such as business, education, theology, sciences, and the liberal arts, along with internships and study abroad opportunities that enrich the student experience.

Campus culture at SNU is strongly rooted in its Nazarene heritage, with regular chapel services, small group ministries, and community service integrated into student life to foster both spiritual growth and close-knit relationships.

In recent years, SNU has also established men’s and women’s rugby teams as varsity sports. Introduced in 2021 with support from the athletics department, both teams compete in National Collegiate Rugby (NCR) Division 1 and have quickly developed strong programs that emphasize athletic development, teamwork, and community both on and off the field. Leading both the men’s and women’s rugby teams is Aric Gilliland, a 2002 SNU alumnus who has served as head coach since the program’s inception and has guided the teams to notable achievements, including multiple conference successes and national-level competition appearances and national championships for the women...including being the NCR D1 Champs in 2025!
