Have you ever received your ballot and wondered - what do some of these NC government officials even do!?

Well you’re not alone. Today let’s learn civics: North Carolina State Government Edition!⁠

In NC, ten members of the Executive Branch are popularly elected every 4 years, including the Governor, Lieutenant Governor, Secretary of State, State Treasurer, and State Auditor. ⁠
⁠
Several department heads are also elected including Agriculture, Insurance, Justice, Labor, and Public Instruction. 🚌 🎒⁠
⁠
Did you know that in North Carolina, the State Auditor appoints members to the NC State Board of Elections, as well as the Chairs of County Boards of Elections? ⁠This is a recent change in how things are done, lawmakers moved these responsibilities from the Secretary of State to the State Auditor in 2025.

Some of these elected offices may not be as well-known, but they are important to know to be an informed voter, ready to cast well-researched votes! 🗳️⁠

Quick Overview of NC State Government:⁠
⁠
➡️ The Governor heads the Executive branch and serves as Commander during state emergency responses. They ensure state laws are carried out and can approve or veto bills passed by the General Assembly. ⁠
⁠
➡️ The Lieutenant Governor has power in both the legislative and executive branches, and steps in if the Governor cannot do their job.⁠
⁠
➡️ The Secretary of State protects consumers from fraud and handles business licensing. ⁠
⁠
➡️ The Superintendent of Public Instruction in NC sets policies for every school district in the state. ⁠
⁠
➡️ The State Treasurer runs the state’s pension and healthcare plans. ⁠
⁠
➡️ The State Auditor appoints the NC State Board of Elections, the Chairs of County Boards of Elections, and watches the $ for government budget transparency.

Our ambassadors spent the evening in the Arrowood/Nationad Ford neighborhood for night out supporting the City Of Charlotte STRATEGIC INVESTMENT AREAS informing the community about the mobility improvements coming to Charlotte neighborhoods. CMPD officers were also present to help hand out school supplies. 📚 🏫 ✏️
