From Online Diaries to Hollywood: Angela Nissel Celebrates 25 Years of Storytelling

Angela shares candid, funny stories about money, college, and survival online before blogging and social media became mainstream. Twenty-five years later, her voice has carried her from The Broke Diaries into Hollywood writers’ rooms and back to memoir with Good Grief, Pass the Bread, Mom Is Dead.

For more than two decades, Angela has brought her distinctive blend of humor, honesty, and cultural insight to television series including Scrubs, The Boondocks, Mixed-ish, Ginny & Georgia, and The Other Black Girl. Before launching her television career, she co-founded Okayplayer alongside Questlove, helping to build one of the internet’s earliest and most influential Black music and culture communities.

In 2026, Angela celebrates the 25th anniversary of her groundbreaking debut, The Broke Diaries. Created from the online journal she began while navigating college life with very little money, the book became a national bestseller and helped usher in a new era of candid, comedic personal storytelling on the internet.

Born and raised in Philadelphia and a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania, Angela has appeared on The Oprah Winfrey Show, 20/20, and NPR’s Wait Wait… Don’t Tell Me!. Her work across books, television, and digital media explores family, identity, grief, money, mental health, and the complicated art of surviving life with your sense of humor intact.

That creates a lively, layered conversation about:

Becoming an accidental internet storyteller before the influencer era
What The Broke Diaries still says about student finances and the cost of getting by
Writing comedy for iconic television shows as a Black woman in Hollywood
Using humor to talk about grief, caregiving, mental health, and complicated family relationships
What Angela has learned across 25 years of writing her life in public.

One week til my birthday and I am accepting that I have officially entered mid-life😜 New Book Coming—>MENOPAUSE MENDED 4/14/26
Nearly 100 million women in the United States are peri- or postmenopausal, yet the majority are still struggling to find relief from symptoms that disrupt sleep, cognition, energy, and overall quality of life. In Menopause Mended: The Proven Truth About Bioidentical Hormone Therapy, Women’s Health, and the Business of Midlife (Koehler Books; April 14, 2026), veteran OB-GYN Jerrold H. Weinberg, MD, FACOG, delivers an evidence-based roadmap for restoring women’s health during and after menopause.

Drawing on more than five decades of clinical practice and over 20 years specializing in menopausal medicine, Dr. Weinberg challenges long-standing myths surrounding hormone therapy—myths that have left millions of women untreated or undertreated due to fear rather than science. His research confirms that compounded transdermal estradiol and progesterone—often referred to as bioidentical hormones—are safe, effective, and affordable, even for women in their 60s, 70s, and 80s.

“Too many women are told to ‘just deal with it,’” says Dr. Weinberg. “Menopause symptoms are real, debilitating, and treatable. Women deserve accurate information and solutions that actually work.”

Published by Koehler Books and distributed by Ingram, Menopause Mended is available in softcover ($22.95), hardcover ($32.95), and ebook ($9.99). The book is written for women navigating menopause as well as physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, doulas, therapists, and compounding pharmacists seeking reliable, science-driven guidance.

We want to be a resource to women in mid-life.

NEW RELEASE: This year, we kicked off with a debut that is inspired by the experiences and loves of an author with 25 years of marriage under his belt.

“Fans of deeply emotional, healing-centered romance—from Kennedy Ryan to Tia Williams—will embrace Hope’s Sunrise for its authenticity, heart, and powerful message of second chances.”

The story centers on Dr. Hope Castillo, a brilliant Black psychologist who must confront her own trauma when her sister marries the man who once shattered her life. As Hope navigates betrayal, family conflict, faith, and a tender second chance at love with a widowed father, the novel blends romance and emotional depth with themes that feel urgently relevant.

John Gary Long is a native of Northeast Ohio, now based in Houston. John spent more than 25 years as a corporate executive before stepping boldly into his lifelong dream of becoming a writer. [www.johngarylong.com.
