Hearing loss is stigmatized because no one talks about it. šŸ¦»šŸ‘€

When we treat it like something to be hidden, people might feel a need to hide.

When we start to confidently open up about the technology we use, that confidence can be contagious. It might allow someone else to feel comfortable opening up about their hearing loss.

Once we start sharing ideas, we learn that others have the same struggles and thoughts we do. We we share our tips, tricks and tools, we suddenly have a place to embrace the technology that is available.

Like using spell check or a calculator, CaptionMate helps with clarity for your phone calls.

CaptionMate captions your calls in real-time and is FREE to anyone in the US with a hearing loss.

Do these fears about using the phone resonate? šŸ‘€

Many people with hearing loss avoid using the phone. There’s an unexplainable anxiety that comes with taking the chance on the phone.

šŸ”· I miss THE ONE important word.
Have you ever heard the whole joke but missed the punchline? Needing to ask someone to repeat a key word three times can lead to frustration for both parties and does not solve the communication issues. Many times, I’ll overlook the word.

šŸ”· Context changes
If my purpose for the call is to make an appointment, I expect the words to match the words related to the appointment. Sometimes, people throw in conversational words about their weekend, and I’m not expecting those words, which leads to confusion.

šŸ”· Self-advocacy fatigue
Disclosing your hearing loss can be draining. Not everyone understands what you need, or they’ll start speaking very slowly which makes it harder to understand

šŸ”· The unknowns
There are certain sounds my hearing levels can’t access. When I use the phone, I take a chance on the unknowns, which can include accents, voice pitch, mumbling, background noise, reception/connection, headset quality, voice-activated systems, and more.

šŸ”· Listening Fatigue
Focusing on the call alone and figuring out all of the above is draining. It can make me really tired to complete the rest of my day’s tasks. Sometimes, many calls need to be made in a day.

CaptionMate can help
CaptionMate captions your calls in real time. Bringing:

šŸ”· Confidence
šŸ”· Context
šŸ”· Clarity
šŸ”· Backup
šŸ”· Transcripts
šŸ”· Privacy

It’s not that we can’t hear the person on the other end, but we have trouble making out the words.

With certain letter sounds lost in speech, a lot words sound similar and blend together.

We received a user story about how our Cloud channel saved their business day! Story below:

āœ… CaptionMate’s Cloud Channel saved me today! ā˜ļø

I live in an area with spotty cell phone reception. Today, my cell phone carrier experienced a nationwide outage! At first, I wasn’t sure how to conduct my business phone calls!

I’m hard of hearing and rely on captioning, but today, I couldn’t even receive calls.

Thanks to CaptionMate’s Cloud channel and my assigned number, I could use Wi-Fi to make and receive calls with my CaptionMate number.

For today’s outage and the spotty reception in my area, the Cloud channel has been great for this exact reason.

It’s an added bonus to the fact that my phone calls are accessible with CaptionMate.

If you’re looking to change your channel:

Go to ā€œSettingsā€ and ā€œCalls,ā€ and under ā€œChannel,ā€ select ā€œCloud.ā€ You can always change back to ā€œClassicā€ mode later if you prefer it.

CaptionMate captions your phone calls in real-time.

It’s FREE to anyone in the US with a hearing loss.

Share this with anyone who needs Wi-Fi access to their calls. CaptionMate is available on both iOS and Android.

from - one of our brand Ambassadors!

-----

I am so excited to be partnering with .Mate, an incredible app that adds captions to mobile phone calls! It’s led by a wonderful team that includes members of the Deaf and hard of hearing community who understand the need for communication access. I’ve been using CaptionMate for several months now and it has made my phone calls easier and more accessible as a Deaf person! šŸ’™

One of my favorite features that CaptionMate offers is the ability to recognize voices in over 100 languages. I can easily change the captioning language to Spanish, even mid-conversation, which has been incredibly helpful when communicating with my Latino family and community members. As a Deaf person, staying connected with family can be challenging due to language barriers, and I’m glad that CaptionMate has allowed me to strengthen those connections.

On top of that, I’ve noticed that CaptionMate integrates seamlessly with my Bluetooth hearing aids with little to no interruptions in sound and quality, so I can listen along to a conversation while using the captions, ensuring I’m not missing anything!

CaptionMate also has an option to caption both sides of the conversation. This gives me real-time feedback on whether the other person can hear and understand me clearly, which has been so helpful in reducing miscommunications, especially during important phone calls like with healthcare providers.

Best of all, CaptionMate is completely free to use for Deaf and hard of hearing people thanks to FCC funding. You can download CaptionMate from the App Store or Google Play store using the link in my bio!

I’m excited to share more about how I use CaptionMate in the coming weeks! I’m really grateful for technology that allows me to add accessibility into my routine and live more independently as my proud Deaf self. I hope you’ll give it a try!

includes everyone on the spectrum of deafness, including those with hearing loss and who are hard of hearing.

One struggle those of us with hearing loss have is the use of the phrase ā€œNever mindā€.

It’s often used as a response when we miss something or ask someone to repeat themselves.

Understandably:

šŸ”· It can be frustrating to repeat something.

šŸ”· The timing of the request to repeat may be awkward.

šŸ”· The moment of the joke may have passed and can’t be explained the same way.

But when someone says, ā€œNever mind,ā€ it can feel dismissive. It is as if someone else is making the decision about what is and isn’t relevant information.

The important part of repeating what was said is to provide accessibility and access.

Context is the cornerstone of our communication. Moreover, this struggle is real on the phone. Without visual cues, there is so much information that can be missed. CaptionMate aims to fill in those blanks and provide the conversation script and context so that you don’t have to work as hard listening, and so that you don’t run into a ā€œnever mindā€ situation.

One of our users recently stated:
With real-time captioning for my phone calls, I can grasp the context and discriminate the words being said. It removes the guesswork from the equation by providing access. I like that I do not need to feel awkward asking others to repeat themselves.

What do you love about your hearing loss? šŸ‘€

It’s Disability Pride Month, and we wanted to look on the brighter side of hearing loss. So often, in a hearing-centric world, hearing loss is seen as a stigma. However, there are things that we also love about our hearing loss.

A few weeks ago, we asked our users what they love about their hearing loss and we wanted to share some of the responses we got.

šŸ”· It makes me more aware of body language and visual cues.

šŸ”· I can choose to take my hearing aids out for a rest and enjoy the silence.

šŸ”· I get a kick out of saying things like ā€œI’m beepingā€ or ā€œMy ear just diedā€ and seeing the expressions on others’ faces.

šŸ”· I can sleep through the night in quiet.

šŸ”· I love my hearing loss community that just gets me.

šŸ”· Losing my hearing has made me more kind and empathetic. I used to take things for granted, for which I now recognize the nuances.

There are so many different ways we can love our hearing loss.

This makes our community unique because it shares thoughts and ideas that allow us to see things from a different perspective.

We love that we get to provide accessibility through CaptionMate, an app that captions phone calls in real-time.

It’s free for anyone in the U.S. with a hearing loss. Try it today!

ā€œWhy didn’t I know this existed?ā€ 🤯

This is the most common response we get once someone tries CaptionMate for the first time.

CaptionMate is an app for those with hearing loss, that captions your phone calls in real-time.

When we ask people if they’ll try CaptionMate, we sometimes get a reluctant response—a hesitant ā€œsure, I’ll try it.ā€

Once we check in with our new users, they’re often amazed. The first thing they tell us is, ā€œWhy didn’t I know this existed?ā€ Then, they list all the reasons they love our app.

Various responses:

šŸ”· With so many calls I must make to prep for travel, this was a lifesaver.

šŸ”· With my parent in the hospital, it allowed me to make all the calls I needed to on the go. I got so much done without going to a quiet space at home first.

šŸ”· I have been having more success on client calls and have signed more clients as a result. This app created new revenue for me!

šŸ”· I was out for a run, and I was able to answer a school call to pick up my child, who was sick.

šŸ”· I couldn’t believe how accurate it was! I actually enjoyed using the phone!

So often, with the stigma of hearing loss, people also tend to avoid accessible technology that will help them. However, once our users have tried CaptionMate, the biggest surprise seems to be how simple it is.

Did you know that you can use CaptionMate on your desktop? šŸ‘€

This is part of our multi-casting feature. Our app is available on mobile phones, tablets and through the browser on your desktop.

Here are some of our users’ favorite ways to use CaptionMate on their desktops:

šŸ”· With and next to a Zoom meeting
You can dial in with CaptionMate and see the words right next to your conversation on the screen.

šŸ”· For work calls where it’s right in front of them
When we’re at work, it’s nice to be able to keep the conversation on the screen instead of holding a phone separately.

šŸ”· Having it on screen helps with note-taking
Because there’s no separate device, you can easily see and take the necessary notes.

šŸ”· Full context in front of you helps with front loading.
Front loading is when you have the context and information in front of you so that you don’t have to work so hard to understand all the vocal information.

šŸ”· Saved transcript helps with immediate follow-ups.
When you want to send a follow-up email immediately after your meeting. Saved transcripts provide easy access.

We talk a lot about using CaptionMate in day-to-day scenarios, and it also provides a huge advantage in the workplace where we’re sometimes at our computers all day.
