I had the pleasure of spending time talking about bees with one of the local 4-H clubs. Thanks to Jordan Bishop with Wyo woodenware -everything beehives for the use of his materials and observation hive. The members enjoyed finding the queen.

I was running low on queens so, on a whim, I ordered a couple of Buckfast queens. I don’t have any immediate need so I thought would make available to those who can pick up in Cheyenne.

They should be here Tuesday or Wednesday.

$48 each.

I also have a handful of other queens of different breeds.

I was thinking about the high wintering success that hobbyists had this year. Don’t let that make you lazy. Plan this year like it’s going to be the hardest winter ever. This means multiple extreme temperature swings, bitter cold, warm spells, wind, etc.

Start thinking and planning how you are going to prepare to overcome the following things:

Mites
Cold
High humidity in the hive
Mice
Wind
Starvation

Any single one of these can be the straw that broke the camel’s back. This last winter was starvation due to consistently warm temps and increased bee activity for some.

When you have one box that can’t seem to contain all of the bees, it’s time to check them. Here are a few shots of the nucs waiting to be picked up. I had to pull some frames of brood and some bees from a couple of them. The one in the first photo had several queen cells in it.
