If you have been wondering about what I have been working on, here is one project that I am so honored and excited to be a part of. We got a Hebru Brantley sculpture, y'all!!! VS Creative Consulting, my consulting company, has been working with Westside Health Authority Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events and Hebru Brantley to continue to build on the work that Malcolm Crawford has been working on for decades. This investment will benefit the community of Austin and the businesses on Chicago Ave. Be on the look out for the official unveiling of Lil Mama coming in a few weeks on November 8th. More to come!

One of the other projects that VS Creative Consulting has been working on and one of my dreams to own and operate a brick and mortar business. The Outwest Gallery & Cafe will be located next door to POPcourts! --the building with the mural. Shout out to Paint The City for creating the iconic mural! I just signed the commitment letter from City of Chicago Department of Planning & Development last week! More to come!

Mary Ware Dennett was a suffragette and birth control reformer. Mary founded the first birth control organization in America, The National Birth Control League.

In 1915, Mary published "The S*x Side of Life" as a teaching tool for her teenage sons and other young men. Sending this pamphlet through the mail was illegal under the Comstock Act, so it was a surprise that her first arrest did not take place until 1929. She appealed and in a groundbreaking ruling, the Appeals Court ruled in her favour and thus began the slow removal of laws prohibiting obscene materials.

Each of the historic triumphs we will highlight this month helped to move the women's movement forward. Hope they inspire you - of all genders and backgrounds- to believe that you can do anything you set your mind to.

Bessie Coleman was born on January 26, 1892. She became the first African- American woman to hold a pilot license. Bessie earned her license in France in 1921, two years before her more famous contemporary Amelia Earhart. No one would train her to fly a plane in America, so she travelled to France to get her certification.

Defeating gender and racial prejudice, the then 29 year old became a symbol for millions of women of colour at a time when segregation and equal rights battles were raging across the country.

We thank you Bessie.

Madame C. J. Walker was born Sarah Breedlove on December 23, 1867. After suffering from a scalp ailment that resulted in hair loss, she invented a line of African American hair care and beauty products.

By 1905, Walker was promoting her line doing lecture/ demonstrations around the country. In 1910, she built and opened a production facility, a beauty school and office building in Indianapolis.

Madame C.J Walker's Manufacturing Company became enormously successful, with profits equivalent to several million dollars today.

Madame C.J. Walker became one of the first American women to be a self -made millionaire. She used the wealth she amassed to support the work of African American artists, writers , scholars and entrepreneurs of the Harlem Renaissance.

We thank her for paving the way for many of the successful African American beauty businesses that have emerged since then.
