It’s here!!!

My first LinkedIn Learning course is now available!

Developing Emotional Intelligence to Further Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion was designed to help you connect the dots between emotional intelligence (EI) and DEI.

Because you cannot do DEI without EI.

In this course you’ll:
- Explore your own emotions and biases
- Learn to navigate cross-cultural interactions with empathy and understanding
- Develop an awareness of cultural nuances, biases, and the impact of cultural differences on emotional expression, and more.

Thanks again to my LinkedIn for Learning team for all of your wonderful support, especially Scott Erickson and my producer, Nicole Mangona, PMP, for helping bring my vision to life!

I can’t wait to walk and guide you through this course.

I look forward to hearing your thoughts and takeaways!

October is Emotional Intelligence Awareness Month.

I state in Chapter One of my book that:

“Emotional intelligence is the most overhyped, underutilized, and misused skill that I can think of.”

Because it is.

It has become a trendy management buzzword, but I’m here to argue that it’s so much more!

It’s a life skill that transcends the workplace and can be a catalyst for equity, inclusion, and psychologically safe spaces.

So this October, I’d love to dive deep into the fascinating world of emotions in my signature talk, "The Color of Emotional Intelligence," inspired by my bestselling book of the same title.

Learn how cultural background and identity influence our emotional intelligence and shape our relationships with others. Great for leaders at every level!

In a world where connection is key, EQ is essential! Understanding and managing emotions can transform how we communicate, collaborate, and lead.

Our EQ empowers us to have healthier relationships with ourselves and others.

In the Workplace: It's the glue that holds teams together. It fosters empathy, effective decision-making, and boosts team engagement, productivity, and a positive work culture.

Outside the Office: EQ helps you manage stress and thrive in your personal life. It enhances our relationships, helps us navigate conflicts, and improves overall well-being.

So why wait? September is almost halfway gone! Don’t wait! Let’s set a date now!

Let's embark on a journey to harness the incredible potential of emotional intelligence and begin to see the world in color!

National Personal Space Day promotes kindness toward sensitivities and supports healing by recognizing everyone's boundaries around touch.

Several years back, many workplaces remodeled their environments to be more open. These open-concept layouts may have worked in theory; however, they came with some consequences that may have been avoided if diverse voices had been at the design table. The open concept meant to encourage collaboration quickly becomes distracting for introverts and extroverts alike. Also, for those who are neurodivergent.

Working in an environment that constantly drains you mentally can lead to minimal productivity if any at all. This may cause employees to feel like they need to avoid being around other people.

Coupled with the increased health risks and anxiety due to Covid-19, there's a greater need to respect others' needs for personal space.

Ways to accommodate personal space in the workplace may include:

- the option to have flexibility in which the employee works from home
- limited mandatory meetings when critical life events happen
- the option to have do not disturb signs on office doors
- quiet spaces/rooms that employees can reserve

Sensory overload is a thing. Physical and sexual trauma as well. Additionally, there are the effects of Covid-19, which has increased one's sensitivities around physical space and physical distancing.

Creating a psychologically safe environment includes physical, mental, and emotional safety -- without belittling, harassing, or shaming. Let's all work on intentionally work on respecting the personal space of others.

Do you get worried when you look at your calendar?

We tend to overextend during the holidays by saying "yes" to everything. If you're over-scheduled, learn to say "no." It's a complete sentence. We sometimes overcommit because we believe we can do it all. It could also be related to people-pleasing. Whatever the reason, try to keep stress to a minimum by not overscheduling and committing to more than you have time for.

Interpersonal trust, self-awareness, and psychological safety are necessary for learning and growth.

Businesses must prioritize team psychological safety in the workplace if they want to be successful. Psychological safety contributes to an inclusive, diverse, and welcoming workplace. A work environment in which team members feel free to express themselves.

Addressing mental health in the workplace isn’t just about Employee Assistance Programs (EAPs) or discounts for the gym. No, it’s about the entire employee experience.

Did you know that the brain experiences the workplace first and foremost as a social system? That means recognizing the impact of workplace interactions on an employee’s well-being. As a leader and coworker, how are you working to create a team and an environment that positively affects the well-being of others?

Also, recognize that outside influences make their way into these daily interactions. Some are personal family matters or current events. Do not neglect or belittle how these issues could affect your people.

Leaders, check in with your people. Elevate your own emotional intelligence so you can model the behavior that cultivates psychologically safe work environments. Minimize threat and increase reward and a sense of belonging. Normalize discussing events and issues that can impact one’s mental health to erase the stigma. And do this as part of your culture and not just the month of November

Feeling stuck?

Discontented?

Frustrated?

It may be that there are aspects of your life that are misaligned.

Practicing self-awareness, an Emotional Intelligence competency, can help you cultivate better work-life alignment.

If you are uncertain, start asking yourself these questions:

1. Does this relationship spark joy, or is it worth my investment?
2. What aspects of my work fuel me, and what drains me?
3. Do I enjoy my work but not my work environment?
4. Am I making time for myself and the things I enjoy?
5. Whom am I keeping around past their expiration date?
6. Am I content or complacent in my life (relationship, work)?
7. Am I crossing my own boundaries (saying yes to others while saying no to myself)?

World Kindness Day is a worldwide celebration emphasizing the value of being kind to one another, oneself, and the world. Kindness may make the world a more pleasant place for everyone. They can increase feelings of confidence, control, enjoyment, and positivity. They may also inspire others to replicate the good acts they have witnessed.

There are numerous ways to show kindness. Complimenting people is a simple way to show it. When you notice someone in need, one way to be kind is to open your eyes and act. When people are helpful to others in need, a sense of belonging is formed, so show some kindness today!
