You know how in those sappy Christmas movies, they're always shopping at friendly local retailers in lovely vibrant towns? That's because they go together! Remember to support your own independents this holiday season because wouldn't you rather live in Bedford Falls than in Pottersville?

If you want to learn more about how we developed these numbers or to explore having them localized to your town, visit http://www.civiceconomics.com/indie-impact.html

Publishers Weekly: ABA Report Charts Damage Done to Retailers by Amazon's Expansion

A new study backed by the ABA found that the movement of dollars to Amazon and away from retailers displaced 136,000 shops, occupying 1.1 billion square feet of traditional commercial space in 2021. A further 1.7 million retail jobs were displaced.

This week, the American Booksellers Association and Civic Economics released UNFulfilled, our latest study of Amazon and its impact on American communities. There is some eye-opening stuff in there, quantifying the impacts of shifting $367 Billion in retail sales from the commercial districts our communities are designed around to outlying industrial parks - with public subsidies often gratuitously added by local officials who like cutting ribbons more than they like building strong local economies.

The article tries and mostly fails to associate Prime Day and support for small business. What it does better is link to Civic Economics' website and our research for Independent We Stand to support the idea of shopping small. Thanks, NYTimes and Wirecutter!

The pandemic has been tough on local businesses. Here’s how you can support them, even during Amazon’s biggest sale event.

We love how Love Live Local transformed their study into infographics -- let's see if we can find other communities who have done the same.

Remember your local booksellers this holiday season.

In just one year, Amazon sales displaced the equivalent of 540 million square feet of retail space & 900,000 retail jobs. (Civic Economics, 2018)

If you want Amazon to be the world's only retailer, keep shopping there.

Love Live Local reminds you that Local Matters. We can't all live on Cape Cod, but we can do a similar study for wherever you call home.

Measuring the impact of the independent and locally owned business community on Cape Cod Since 2013 Love Live Local has been communicating the importance of Cape Cod’s independent businesses and citing study after study that show small businesses make communities unique, create more jobs, bring in...

The last couple of months have been hard on independent businesses ... and a veritable gold mine of monopoly money for Amazon. So our friends at the American Booksellers Association have prepared two great fliers for indie businesses: one about the economic benefitsthey bring to their communities, and one about the economic damage produced by Amazon.

Both draw heavily on Civic Economics research, and we look forward to helping small businesses all over as they work to recover from Covid spring.

To encourage local shopping, ABA has refreshed three popular marketing materials: “Here’s What You Just Did,” “Here’s What Amazon Just Did,” and “Amazon’s Negative Impact to Your Community.”
