This week, I came out.
What does that mean?
When someone asked me if the woman I was with was my friend or sister, I said that she was my partner… “we are engaged! She is my fiancée.”
There was a slight pause before I responded. Because that has always been my MO.
Because when I was small, there were always whispers or negativity associated with people who identified as LGBTQ+.
I learned from a young age to be and to feel ashamed.
I have been working on un-learning this for a very long time, but sometimes it still kicks in when I am meeting someone new, and when they ask, and when I need to come out…again.
Because as a LGBTQ+ person, we are always coming out to someone new.
I have been very lucky. My family and friends are very supportive and loving. I live in a big city in which saying and living an “out” life is easy.
Not everyone has this luxury. And Florida is a place in which our children, and our Trans brothers and sisters, are being forced out and to feel shame, or that they need to go back “into the closet.”
My MO has also always been to speak up, especially for those who are marginalized, and I get to do this as a proud Board member, and Chair, of the SAVE LGBT Champions of Equality Gala honoring our community heroes, on May 4th, at the Eden Roc Miami Beach. Tickets are now available for purchase.
Join me, join us!
Let’s celebrate our successes, and build on them. We have the opportunity to create a world in which our children, and our Trans familia, can feel proud, happy and supported! 🏳️🌈❤️🏳️⚧️
Join me and support SAVE LGBT’s work to advance full equality for LGBTQ+ people in South Florida! 💪🏽
PS… Early bird tickets sales extended to April 15.
