I remember the good old days when people actually used their problem-solving and critical thinking skills… and at least tried to figure things out first. 😂

Before calling the boss.
Before emailing everybody.
Before scheduling a meeting.

As an HR consultant, I can tell you this: employers aren’t looking for people who know everything. They’re looking for people who can think through a problem before making every little thing an emergency.

Can I be honest for a minute?

I know mistakes are part of growth. I know they’re often our greatest teachers. I know every successful person has a long list of lessons they learned the hard way.

But whew...I still hate making them.

Some mistakes are small. Others feel like a punch to the gut. They make you question yourself, replay every decision, and wonder how you could have done things differently.

That’s where I am right now.

The lesson I’m holding onto is this: a mistake doesn’t erase my experience, my intelligence, or my purpose. It simply reveals a gap I didn’t know existed. Now I have the opportunity to close it.

Growth isn’t always graceful. Sometimes it looks like uncomfortable conversations, expensive lessons, bruised confidence, and choosing to keep pushing anyway.

So if you’re sitting with a mistake today, give yourself enough grace to learn from it, take accountability where needed, make it right if you can, and then keep moving forward.

The goal isn’t to become someone who never makes mistakes.

The goal is to become someone who doesn’t waste them.

There is something special about watching people step into their gifts.

One of my former Roosevelt University students Dominic Radford shared that he was passionate about photography, and I told him, “Say less…come shot for me.”

Since then, he’s photographed multiple events for me, from classes at ALL THINGS FITNESS (ATF) to behind-the-scenes moments at my Chicago Today appearance, and even one of the most meaningful days for my family, my grandmother’s 90th birthday celebration.

These photos from NBC are just one example of the incredible work he’s doing. He’s talented, professional, creative, and only getting better.

If you’re looking for a photographer for your next event, graduation, branding session, or special occasion, I hope you’ll consider supporting this young creative. We all need someone willing to give us an opportunity, and I’m grateful to be a small part of his journey.

A year ago, I was a participant.

This year, I got to help interview applicants for the next cohort of the Goldman Sachs One Million Black Women Black in Business program.

Full-circle moments hit differently. 💛

I'm grateful for the opportunity to pour back into a program that challenged me, stretched me, and helped me grow as a business owner. The future is bright, and these women are building it.

Quick reminder: while social media keeps telling us nobody is hiring, my clients currently have 24+ open positions.

Schools.
Nonprofits.
Cultural centers.
Restaurants.
Retail.

One thing I see every day as an HR consultant: the job market isn’t dead. It’s competitive.

The opportunities are there, but so is the need for strong resumes, intentional networking, and a thoughtful job search strategy.

Every week, I’m helping organizations find talent and helping job seekers position themselves for opportunities. That’s the work.

Chicago, who’s hiring? And who’s looking? Let’s make some connections. 👏🏾

And before somebody jumps in to say, “I’ve been looking for months and can’t find anything” or “Nobody wants to pay a living wage,” I hear you.

Some industries are hiring more than others. Some employers are paying better than others. The market is frustrating for a lot of people right now.

But don’t confuse a difficult market with a dead market. Keep applying. Keep networking. Keep refining your approach. Sometimes it’s not that there are no opportunities. It’s that the strategy needs to change.

I have not lost one pound.

But I am stronger.

The stronger I get physically, the stronger I feel mentally. There is something powerful about knowing you can carry heavy things, in the gym and in life.

The scale hasn’t changed.
