There have been many experiences in my life, but one truth remains: I had never experienced a man who loved me completely without a hidden agenda until DJ.
Even through the small disagreements and the six-month separation we once endured, he never stopped being everything I needed and wanted. The day the doctors told me he wasn’t going to make it, every argument, every complaint, every frustration instantly became insignificant.
Saturday marks our 14th wedding anniversary. No, we won’t be on vacation with our feet in black sand. He won’t be driving me to all my favorite spots so I can splurge a little too much. Life doesn’t look the way we imagined it would. But even so... I am grateful.
Am I sad? Absolutely.
Am I hurting? Without question.
But, one thing for certain, DJ loved/love him some Shaniqua.
He never cared about my weight, my bald head, my degrees, my titles, or anything society says should define a woman. He simply loved me. And he didn’t play about me or these children of ours.
DJ was our Black MacGyver. He could fix just about anything. He was my personal security, my chauffeur for Purple Path, my sounding board alongside God, and one of the greatest encouragers of my purpose. He helped amplify my voice and supported the woman I’ve become. He showed up for every school event as an involved father, became “Dad” to neighborhood kids wherever we lived, and loved my mama as if she were his own.
He’s still here, and I thank God for that every single day. But I won’t pretend I don’t grieve the life we thought we’d continue living together.
I miss my man, y’all.
