I don’t know why this anniversary feels different this year.

Maybe it’s because, if you know, you know.

Today, my husband and I celebrate 14 years of marriage. We’ve known each other and been together for 20 years. And after everything life has brought to our doorstep, the fact that we are still here is something I will never take lightly.

I love that man. DEEPLY.

And today, as the caregiving wife, I’m giving myself permission to lay low.

I’m staying in my room.
I’m staying in this bed.
I’m binge-watching TV.
I’m scrolling TikTok.
I’m eating.
I’m sleeping.
I’m praying.
And most importantly, I’m laughing in this room with HIM.

No pressure to make today look like anything other than what we need it to be.

Earlier this week, my middle daughter, YaYa, and I were talking about my favorite numbers. I told her I actually have two: 8 and 12.

12 reminds me of discipleship.

8 represents new beginnings.

And then Ayana made a connection that stopped me in my tracks.

My first self-published memoir is 12: Memoir to My Younger Self.

And our wedding anniversary?

8-8-12.

WOW.

All these years, and I had never put that together.

Sometimes you have to say the thing out loud so somebody else can pick up what you’re putting down and help you see what has been sitting right in front of you the whole time.

8. New beginnings.
12. Discipleship.
8-8-12. Us.

And maybe that’s why this year feels different.

Because after everything we have experienced, I understand that a new beginning doesn’t always mean starting over.

Sometimes a new beginning is realizing the blessing in still being here.

Still married.
Still laughing.
Still loving.
Still praying.
Still choosing each other.

Happy 14th Wedding Anniversary to my husband, my DJ.

20 years of knowing and loving one another.
14 years of marriage.
And a story that is STILL being written.

8-8-12. Forever means something different when love has been tested by life.

There have been many experiences in my life, but one truth remains: I had never experienced a man who loved me completely without a hidden agenda until DJ.

Even through the small disagreements and the six-month separation we once endured, he never stopped being everything I needed and wanted. The day the doctors told me he wasn’t going to make it, every argument, every complaint, every frustration instantly became insignificant.

Saturday marks our 14th wedding anniversary. No, we won’t be on vacation with our feet in black sand. He won’t be driving me to all my favorite spots so I can splurge a little too much. Life doesn’t look the way we imagined it would. But even so... I am grateful.

Am I sad? Absolutely.
Am I hurting? Without question.

But, one thing for certain, DJ loved/love him some Shaniqua.

He never cared about my weight, my bald head, my degrees, my titles, or anything society says should define a woman. He simply loved me. And he didn’t play about me or these children of ours.

DJ was our Black MacGyver. He could fix just about anything. He was my personal security, my chauffeur for Purple Path, my sounding board alongside God, and one of the greatest encouragers of my purpose. He helped amplify my voice and supported the woman I’ve become. He showed up for every school event as an involved father, became “Dad” to neighborhood kids wherever we lived, and loved my mama as if she were his own.

He’s still here, and I thank God for that every single day. But I won’t pretend I don’t grieve the life we thought we’d continue living together.

I miss my man, y’all.

Established 8.8.12. 💜💜
