I recently finished up 8 months consulting working for Loyola University of Chicago. My colleague, Karen Pettus, who worked with me is staying on as their Director to continue building their staff, resources and services!

Taking a break from consulting for a while…after 13 years of contractual work, after retirement in 2010 from a 30 year role as a Director.

Will return to consulting on a smaller scale.

I am preparing to undertake some subcontracted onboarding work with UMass Global strengthening their Alt Fornat and AT support and am continuing some work with the University of Washington, Seattle.

I completed a project for NASPA evaluating their procedures for testing candidates who complete a certification program - how to ensure accessibility in the process.

I also attended the AHEAD 2022 in Cleveland and was involved in three presentations. I enjoyed connecting with colleagues.

I was recently a part of an external evaluation team that conducted a comprehensive Eval of UC-Berkeley! Three of us focused on the DRS department and two others focused on digital accessibility, including web pages, procurement, assistive technology and instructional materials.

Great effort lead by Bill Welsh.

2021 was a full year of consulting in higher education disability resources! I finished work with a New Mexico client, did short term consulting with USC, then assisted them in the fall with onboarding new students, started a relationship with UC Santa Cruz and started onboarding and mentoring with Mills College.

I have also been writing content for an AHEAD book with colleagues and co-editing with Mary Lee Vance.

In 2022, I will be expanding my subcontractor assistance, begin assisting another university in Washington and presenting virtually to the LA Community College District. I also have an invitation to present to faculty on inclusive teaching practices at Whittier College.

I just completed a week’s assignment working for University of California Santa Cruz - great experience and opportunity to consult about improving their Disability Resource Center!

Greetings! I am currently working on co-editing an AHEAD publication that focuses on the QSD paradigm. In it I have composed a chapter about the value and benefits of external evaluations of Disability Resources departments.

I also jus completed a year long contract with New Mexico State University and a shorter contract with USC. I am going to be doing some Onboarding of new students for Mills College in Oakland and a potential longer contract with the University of California Santa Cruz starting in September.

Friends and colleagues! I am going on a Writing Retreat Oct 4-10. I will begin to compile and develop resources about our field of Disability a Resources and Services. This past Feb 2020 marked my 40th year of working in higher education and disability services.

Friends who visit my page - my hope is to develop my web site further in late 2020 and early 2021. I’ll post small notices on Facebook, which will then connect people to my TMLS Consulting Inc. web site.

Let me describe briefly what the past four years have included. In 2017, I completed a 2.5 year role as Interim Director of Disability Support Services at California State University, Fullerton. It was a great experience and I have some lasting friends!

Around the end of this role, I began to do more External Evaluations of Disability Resource Centers for AHEAD and for NASPA, who started a consulting service aimed at VPSA’s who wanted division wide or departmental reviews. I did about 3 institutional evals for each organization.

Then in 2018, I took on what became a two-year consulting role with Pomona College, the largest liberal arts college that is part of the Claremont Colleges. It was a slow process but I and my co-consultants were able to greatly assist in reorganizing the work, advocating for resources and doing a lot of policy/procedures work and some training.

In 2019, I signed a one year contract with Utah Valley University in Orem, Utah to do an analysis and reorganization of their DRC. This ended in March 2020. As this ended, I began working with Brandman University in Irvine, a predominantly online university with mostly adult students and lots of veterans. This role which was initially time-limited is ongoing until December 2020. There have been many transitions and changes. I am having to expand my knowledge and capacity to address myriad organizational and digital accessibility challenges for this institution.

To close, my longer term dream project is to continue working on a “manual or guidebook” about Disability Resources. Over my 40 years working in Disability Resources in Higher Education (including 30 years as the Director and ADA Coordinator at William R. Harper College in Illinois), I have...to parody the Farmer’s Insurance TV ad “learned a lot because I’ve seen a lot”. I’ve been searching and collecting novel and model ways to improve the work that we are charged to do. Stay tuned for what’s next! I will start sharing some resources and perspectives in the future.

I’ve include some pictures of friends and places over the past several years!

I am at the National AHEAD conference and am presenting tomorrow Saturday on a new topic (still working on it), which is focused on the critical thinking skills that are behind decision making about the scope of accommodations and access - critical to the role of Access Specialists and Directors in higher education, Disability Resources work. It is still a work in process.

This is such an important skill to develop as it undergirds the interactive process of determining the scope of accommodations and takes into consideration the environments (learning, participatory, etc.) where students with disabilities are engaged. I am focusing on how to understand and acquire these skills that involve principles, processes and practices. If you are an AHEAD member but not attending this year (in Boston), you can find the slides on the AHEAD web site materials for this 2019 conference.

This is a part of my consulting practice, in which I am doing more training with staff working in Disability Resources.
