Top 5 Things I Wish I Knew Before Becoming a Birth Assistant and Student Midwife:
1️⃣ Crossing the threshold is empowering. Becoming part of the care team instead of standing on the sidelines as a doula changed everything. I felt like I was truly woven into the sacred work of birth.
2️⃣ It’s not as intimidating as it seems. You start with the basics, build your confidence, and no one asks you to do something you aren’t ready for.
3️⃣ Charting and documentation matter. Supporting the midwife through accurate notes, vitals, and clear communication is one of the most important ways you can contribute.
4️⃣ Practical skills change everything. From setting up supplies to monitoring, sterilizing, and assisting in emergencies — these are learnable skills that make you invaluable.
5️⃣ The gratitude stays with you. Clients may only be in your life for a season, but the thank-yous and the sacred moments you share leave imprints that last forever.
✨ This is why I created the Birth Assistant Training — to walk with you as you learn these skills and step confidently into the birth room as an assistant or student midwife.
