Peet's Workers Group

Peet's Workers Group “Challenge the status quo through the lens of our values. This is our rallying cry.” --Pat O?

We work for the self-described “premier specialty coffee and tea company in the United States.”

We have formally challenged this industry leader to take the lead in something every bit as important as producing high quality coffee: creating high quality, sustainable jobs. We believe that Peet’s has a unique opportunity to raise the bar on the treatment of retail employees in the corporate world.

On behalf of ourselves and the 3000+ other non-salaried retail employees at Peet’s, we have officially asked Peet’s for a living wage, sick days, reliable weekly schedules, and periodic merit pay increases. Read our September 3, 2012 letter to management here: http://peetsworkersgroup.blogspot.com/2012/09/LaborDayLetter.html.

A former White House correspondent is not prepared for work in the retail sector...

"Of course, I had no idea what a modern retail job demanded. I didn’t realize the stamina that would be necessary, the extra, unpaid duties that would be tacked on, or the required disregard for one’s own self-esteem."

After veteran reporter Joseph Williams lost his job, he could only find employment in a sporting-goods store. In a personal essay, he recalls his struggles with challenges millions of Americans return to day after day.

One of the most obscene things I learned as a barista was how eager people are to be liked. NYU sophomores, the ones with Jansport backpacks in full makeup at 9

In celebration of International Women's Day, Peet's Workers Group joined the Latino Union of Chicago at a rally for undocumented immigrants, Coming Out of The Shadows.

There was lots of very moving testimony by individuals scheduled for deportation, as well as families who've had loved ones snatched from their homes and sent away.

Sign the Petition because it is inhumane to keep people locked up in solitary without access to other people, fresh air, commissary and medical care. It does not rehabilitate people and leads to more violence.

It's always good to find more media attention being paid to the s*xual harassment of low-wage workers.

"Since s*xual harassment is about power, not s*x, it's not surprising that low-wage women in lousy jobs get a lot of it."

The restaurant industry is the largest source of s*xual harassment claims, while Florida's Coalition of Immokalee Workers says harassment of women farmworkers is pervasive.

Breaking: Peet's Coffee & Tea responds to the public outcry over employee retaliation

Peet's Workers Group would like to thank everyone who wrote and called the company in support of the campaign.

After being verbally threatened and issued a write-up by managment in September, Candice Spatz has just been given the first ever Employee of the Month Award (and a $50 gift card!) at Peet's, Chicago!

We are extremely grateful to the community for their support, and proud of Candice for refusing to be intimidated!

If you ever go to a Peet's Coffee & Tea and the workers seem a little grumpy, please consider the pressure they're under to "move faster than [a] robot," to boost sales while labor hours are cut.

"Judging by Tuesday's picket line turnout, it's clear that UIC faculty members are not fighting this battle for fair labor practices alone. Students, labor organizers and unaffiliated supporters from across the region descended on the university's East Campus Tuesday to support striking faculty members."

Great piece on the by local labor journalist, Emily Brosious.
