What if your employer is just the first buyer for your expertise and not the only buyer?

Last month I was talking with one of my clients.

15+ years in her field.
Highly employable.
Genuinely excellent at what she does.

When her boss left she was asked to take on his responsibilities.

People had been requesting her expertise for years.
So it was NO SURPRISE when she ended up doing her work and his work.

The difference?
Her employer was the only one paying her for her expertise and she was doing double work.

Her employer wasn’t going to pay her double the money 💁
AND she didn’t have a way to get paid more for her expertise outside of her job.

She wasn't confused about her value.
She was confused on how to take what she already knew and find a buyer beyond her employer.

We worked together on this.
Now it’s clear to her that her expertise is commercially valuable and attractive.👏🏽

I asked her one question:
What’s something people have asked you for help with multiple times that you’ve never considered charging for?

This is where everything else began to unfold:

𝗦𝗵𝗲 𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗳𝗶𝗲𝗱 𝗵𝗲𝗿 𝗯𝘂𝘆𝗲𝗿: nonprofit organizations.

And before building anything, she tested the idea through real conversations with CEOs and executive directors in her network.

A BASKETBALL ANALOGY🏀
(just trying to make this make sense to you)

All three of my kids play it competitively - but I'm gonna use my youngest to make my point. She's 12. 💗

She has spent years on:
Her form.
Ball handling.
Footwork drills.
Endurance training.
Defensive positioning.
Her result → she's done everything right in preparation.

Now imagine if she never got into an actual basketball game. She'd have:
No defenders.
No possessions.
No scoreboard.
Her result → She'd look great in practice and still have no idea what works because none of it had been tested.

Well this spring we put her in a competitive basketball club.

The coach's read after one practice session, he said: "She's very skilled. All she needs is to play in a live game."

Ya see, without a live game she can't develop her full basketball IQ without competitive playtime.

This is what happens in business too. I work with a lot of accomplished women trying to figure out whether their expertise could make money outside of their job.

They're reading.
Researching.
Building out a business waaaaaay before they talk to a buyer about it.

Basically it's just a bunch of practice reps with no "live game" in the commercial market.

Are you picking up what I'm putting down with this analogy?

A CONVERSATION WITH A BUYER is the only activity that will prove whether anyone outside your employer would pay for what you know.

This single activity will eliminate the income risk of starting your business.

I worked with a group of career professionals last month.
I learned many of them were taught that there was just one way to make money using their expertise...

And that was to get A JOB

I wasn't raised that way.

My parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles had jobs in their lifetime but all of them were also entrepreneurs owning all kinds of businesses...a department store, a night club, a bar, a real estate business, consulting, direct sales, running the numbers - 😂 - I could go on but it wasn't all legal YET they were ALL entrepreneurs).

They knew how to be resourceful with their own talent. So I spent a full hour explaining to the room that their same expertise can become independent income too, such as:

consulting
coaching
training
keynoting
digital products
professional services

Your job is NOT the only place your expertise can make money.

And no, you don’t have to quit to explore it nor do anything illegal - 😂

I learned a new word today: Fractal

What I thought would be just an early morning walk turned into an unexpected masterclass courtesy of another female entrepreneur I happened to meet along the way.

We talked for maybe five minutes.

I shared with her that the work I do with founders and individual business owners hasn’t yet translated (in my mind) into work with larger organizations.

Her response was simple: Think fractally

I was like - huh?????

Then she started talking about branches and twigs on a tree, broccoli shapes and etc. I was all the way confused but started to understand more as she talked in concepts.

In other words, what if the work doesn’t have to change? What if I simply need to mirror what I already do at a different scale, for aa different group?

hmmmmm....same value, same principles, different scale.

She unlocked me right then and there. That one idea shifted the direction of my entire day.

Because as I write this, I’m sitting in the waiting room, about to meet with the CEO of a nonprofit to explore how the work I’ve been doing with individual founders could serve her entire organization.

No time wasted over here 🤩 all because of a 5 minute chat on my morning walk.

Here's the lesson: Sometimes the opportunity isn’t to create something new. Sometimes it’s to recognize that what already works can be repeated, just at a different scale.

Think fractally.
