A shopping street just outside Málaga on Spain's southern coast came up with an unusual fix for the summer heat: a hand crocheted awning made entirely from recycled materials. For years, the town had relied on plastic tarps to shade the street, the kind that fade, crack, and eventually end up in landfill after a season or two in the sun.

Led by crochet teacher Eva Pacheco, the project began in 2019 after the municipality sought a more sustainable alternative. Using recycled fabric and leftover yarn, the group hand-stitched hundreds of colorful crochet panels that now cover Calle Málaga, creating almost 500 square meters of shade.

Our friends at Go Green Glen Ellyn are working to keep your sports gear out of the landfill. If you have any gently-used sports equipment, be sure to participate!

To receive a voucher, drop off your items this week through this Friday, July 17th, at Ackerman Sports & Fitness Center during their business hours. Items will then be exchanged using the vouchers or sold on Sunday, July 19th, from 1-2pm.
