In banking, it’s easy to believe success comes down to luck — a “lucky break,” the right place at the right time.

And sure, we’ve all experienced moments like these:

🍀 A customer walks in needing a loan
🍀 A business owner at an event shares frustration with their bank
🍀 A competitor exits the market

These moments matter — and great bankers respond to them quickly and professionally.

But let’s be honest…
You can’t build a career on luck alone.

Sustainable success comes from creating your own opportunities — not waiting for them.

Relying on foot traffic or marketing isn’t enough if you want to reach the level of success you’re truly capable of.

In my upcoming book, "When I Grow Up I Want To Be a Banker", I share practical strategies to help bankers take control of their growth — regardless of how they found their way into this industry.

Because whether you chose banking intentionally or “fell into it,” one thing is true: This industry gives you an incredible opportunity to build a meaningful career and a great life.

Inspired by Taylor Swift’s excellent new release "The Life of a Show Girl", I considered what 10 tracks would capture the soundtrack of a banker's daily life.

And here they are:

🎶 Track 1: "Why Oh Why"

Why did I become a banker? Wake up every day and remind yourself about your goals and purpose. Remember that you love what you do.

🎶 Track 2: "P.L.A.N. For Success"

To be successful you have PURPOSE, you LEARN something new every day, you take ACTION and you review your success regularly so you can determine what's NEXT.

🎶 Track 3: "Service With A Smile"

Customers deserve the best version of ourselves. Money matters can be stressful, so make a customer feel confident by always servicing their inquiries with a reassuring smile.

🎶 Track 4: "Let Me Be Your One & Only"

Be the ONE (and only) bank that your customers will need for all their banking requirements and financial goals.

🎶 Track 5: "I Make Your Dreams Come True"

Take the time to explore your customer's immediate and future financials goals. Create a plan to help them achieve these goals.

Everybody wants their money to be safe and secure. Many banks have been around for many years and failure is highly unlikely. Your deposits are insured to a certain amount. And there are many people and processes at your local bank committed to protecting your money against fraud or loss.

Good bankers pride themselves on the close personal relationships they build with their customers. They are not just service providers. They are finance professionals, advisers and friends.
