Using less plastic isn’t about being perfect—it’s about making a few consistent swaps that fit your life. A few grounded truths though…it’s okay to still use plastic when needed, especially for health or convenience. But focus on reducing the most frequent items first! Progress > Perfection

A gentle starting plan that is super doable if you want a simple place to begin this week:
1. Bring your own reusable bags every time you go shopping.
2. Stop buying plastic water bottles and things in single use plastic containers.
3. Replace plastic wrap with a more sustainable option like beeswax, silicone stretch lids or reuse glass containers that you buy other things in. Use them for food storage, bringing your lunch to work, or storing any items that make sense for you! This alone cuts a surprising amount of your plastic footprint!

• Refresh Your Pantry
Check expiration dates and toss what is old, group like items together, and use clear containers for grains, snacks, and dry goods. When you can see it, you can use it up. A lazy Susan in a deep cabinet is a game-changer for condiment storage, or heavy things like flour, sugar, and baking needs.

• Reassess Storage Solutions
Spring is a good time to see if your storage is actually working. Overcrowded shelves, bins you never open, and systems you ignore are signs something needs to change — not just get tidied. Be ruthless in your editing.

• Clean as You Organize
Wipe down shelves, vacuum closet floors, and wash storage bins as you empty them. Spring organizing is the perfect excuse to deep-clean spots that rarely get attention other times of the year.

• Label Everything
Even if you know where things go now, labels make it easy for everyone in the house to maintain the system. When things are outlined, you and everyone knows where to find things, and where to put it back when finished. Less visual clutter is calming to your mind.

In celebration of Earth Day, it’s a great time to think about how the way we organize our homes can also help care for the planet. Reduce, Reuse, Recycle! Decluttering isn’t just about creating calmer spaces—it’s also about making thoughtful decisions about what we bring home, reuse, donate, and rehome. When we live and organize intentionally, fewer items end up in landfills and more find a second life with someone who needs them. A refreshed home and a lighter environmental footprint can go hand in hand. Just because something is free, doesn’t mean you need it. The first R could be REFUSE. How might that help change your life and home?

• Declutter First, Organize Second!
Before buying a single bin or basket, go through everything and decide what to keep, donate, or toss. Organizing things you are not using or don’t need robs you of your precious time — edit first so you're only organizing what you actually will use. If you aren’t sure, ask yourself if you use it in the next 3 months. If not, let it go.
• Work Room by Room
Tackle one space at a time to avoid the "everything is everywhere" overwhelm. Start with high-impact areas like the kitchen, closets, or entryway so you feel the reward quickly. Our brains need the little wins, then we can do more if motivated to do so.
• The “One In, One Out” Rule
Be mindful each new item that enters your home this spring, then commit to one old item leaving. This prevents the slow creep of clutter that undoes all your hard work and keeps your home in balance.
• Do a Seasonal Swap
Pack away heavy winter items (blankets, coats, boots) in labeled bins
Bring out lighter spring/summer items
Swap clothing: put winter and off-season clothes in vacuum bags to save space. It could live under your bed, and will stay dust free that way!
