Operations has a bit of an image problem. Talking about systems, processes, workflows, and automations is rarely compelling dinner-party conversation. It sounds dry. Technical. Boring. Like a rice cake. And yet, for me, there’s very little more satisfying than creating order out of chaos. For ex

The Next System Project has been on my radar since 2015, and I'm happy to report that I was finally able to participate in a Chicago Teach-In a couple of weeks ago at the very well-organized Community Power Convergence!

➡️➡️ If you're not familiar yet, "the Next System Project is an initiative of The Democracy Collaborative aimed at bold thinking and action to address the systemic challenges the United States faces now and in coming decades." ⬅️⬅️

From DEI and Community Defense to Worker Power and Food Sovereignty, I was energized by the Open Space conversations I was in and by the momentum and solidarity I found in the room.

This morning, as I read through the list of folks who signed up for deeper conversations and collaboration across these topics and others, I'm feeling ever grateful to keep expanding and deepening my Chicago community.

The last 10 years have presented me with a lot of personal challenges and professional pivots, so it feels good to be settling in, and I really look forward to helping build The Next System here in Chicago!

I’d love to hear what conversations or projects are energizing others right now. Let me know in the comments!

Let's talk about onboarding again. I’ve seen onboarding done right, really, *really* wrong, and everything in between. After years of navigating new jobs and volunteer gigs, I know what makes a system feel both seamless and human.

In 2020, I started building automated onboarding systems using Dubsado, Make, ClickUp, and Zapier and I geeked out a bit on automations and efficiencies.

But efficiency alone isn’t enough. A human-centered system makes new team members feel valued, empowered, and ready to contribute.

Here’s what matters:

✅ Easy access to a real person for guidance
✅ Transparency around roles and mission
✅ Check-ins to answer questions and give feedback
✅ Learning-style–friendly materials
✅ Meaningful introductions and team connections
✅ Role-specific tasks and clear processes
✅ Resources that anticipate common challenges

If your nonprofit’s onboarding could be smoother, I design human-focused, automated systems that actually work.

Kick off 2026 by giving your new team members a seamless, empowering first few weeks. Comment or message me to get started!

Achievement unlocked! 🏆 After a comprehensive 8-hour training held by RISE Travel Institute and a multi-layered, meaningful carbon reduction pIedge made to The Carbon Literacy Project, I've earned a Certified Carbon Literate designation!

And if that isn't cool enough, I and my cohort at RISE received the news today, which is Annual Carbon Literacy Day, that our pledges were approved!

RISE will be holding more of these trainings. If you want to be informed about it right away, subscribe to our newsletter and/or our page.

Big shoutout thanks to RISE Executive Director Vincie Ho, Ph.D. and RISE Board Member Inemesit Williams for making this training possible.

So you want a strong, diverse nonprofit board of directors, huh? Okay! Do you know how to build one? Do you have all the tools and resources in place to start?

Board recruitment requires more focus than typical staff or volunteer recruitment does. Here’s what you need for an organized, focused board recruitment campaign:

✅ Recruitment committee with clear decision roles.
✅ Recruitment plan outlining your timeline, where you’ll promote openings, how current members can help, and how you’ll review candidates.
✅ Board composition matrix to identify skills, experience, and representation gaps.
✅ Board position description listing responsibilities, required skills, committee assignments, and term lengths.
✅ Expectations document that defines the board's giving/getting policy, meeting participation, and engagement norms.
✅ A prospect profile describing the type of person who best fits your mission, values, and stage of growth.
✅ An onboarding plan that supports new members once they join.

Strong boards don’t happen by accident! They’re built through structure, clarity, and intentional recruitment.

This process is repeatable—it can be developed once with templates and workflows and then refined and customized as needed.

Which of these pieces feels most challenging for your organization right now?

It's November again? ⏳ I don't understand how time works anymore.

Well, we do still have two months left, which is plenty of time to make some meaningful progress on what matters most!

For many nonprofits, this means finding the sweet spot between daily operations and working on the long-term vision. This is where I come in.

Through CSBoyce Nonprofit Solutions, I help nonprofits move from daily overwhelm to strategic clarity. My work focuses on practical, people-centered support across four key areas (below) designed to make your organization stronger, more sustainable, and ready to scale impact.

I focus on small to midsize nonprofits—often founder-led or in transition—where leaders are wearing too many hats and want to strengthen systems, people, and structure without losing sight of the mission.

✅ PEOPLE & CULTURE: Build teams that thrive. I support hiring, onboarding, and creating systems that keep your team engaged and aligned with your mission.

✅ CONSULTING: Clarify your direction. I help assess what’s working, identify what’s not, and co-create strategies that turn vision into action.

✅ EXECUTIVE SERVICES: Strengthen leadership capacity. I provide interim or ongoing fractional executive support, guiding operations, board relations, and decision-making through times of growth or transition.

✅ OPERATIONS & SYSTEMS: Simplify the back end. I streamline processes, implement tech tools, and build systems that save time and amplify mission results.

I’m currently building out detailed webpages for each service area (People & Culture is ready!), so if something here resonates, let’s talk. Just a simple conversation about where your organization feels stuck. You can find my scheduler for a no-cost, no-obligation discovery call in the first comment.

As passionate nonprofit professionals, we talk a lot about advancing the mission. Startup organizations focus much of their grit on program development and service delivery. And understandably so... grant dollars require it, and resources are limited.

But when your team is growing past that crunchy grassroots phase and is considering bringing on new staff, board members, or volunteers, just how ready are you for them and their needs?

✅ Is your onboarding process easy for new folks? Or does it still require your remote team to download, print, sign, scan, upload, and email?
✅ Do you have a checklist of high-priority onboarding tasks to complete, or will people be overwhelmed by a big list with no priority order?
✅ Are you providing a central location to find critical resources, or will folks have to hunt through unfamiliar folders and multiple first-day emails?
✅ Will they be educated about your organization's mission, vision, resources, expectations, and culture--ready to dive into advancing your mission? Or will your new team member be more likely to feel confused and unprepared after onboarding?

Strong onboarding needs to go beyond collecting compliance paperwork.

It should be:
➡️ Seamless enough for folks with any level of tech-savviness to navigate on their own,
➡️ Culturally significant for new team members to understand what makes your organization's day-to-day operations unique,
➡️ Thorough and complete so that everyone knows where to find what they need to be successful in their role,
➡️ Informed by feedback so the process keeps improving with every new hire or volunteer, and
➡️ Sustained through check-ins and refreshed trainings.

When staff, board members, and volunteers understand expectations, know where to find what they need and how they fit into the culture from the start, they stay longer, perform better, and feel like they're part of something important--no matter what their role.

If your organization is revisiting onboarding this quarter, what’s one thing you think will make the biggest impact?
