As passionate nonprofit professionals, we talk a lot about advancing the mission. Startup organizations focus much of their grit on program development and service delivery. And understandably so... grant dollars require it, and resources are limited.
But when your team is growing past that crunchy grassroots phase and is considering bringing on new staff, board members, or volunteers, just how ready are you for them and their needs?
✅ Is your onboarding process easy for new folks? Or does it still require your remote team to download, print, sign, scan, upload, and email?
✅ Do you have a checklist of high-priority onboarding tasks to complete, or will people be overwhelmed by a big list with no priority order?
✅ Are you providing a central location to find critical resources, or will folks have to hunt through unfamiliar folders and multiple first-day emails?
✅ Will they be educated about your organization's mission, vision, resources, expectations, and culture--ready to dive into advancing your mission? Or will your new team member be more likely to feel confused and unprepared after onboarding?
Strong onboarding needs to go beyond collecting compliance paperwork.
It should be:
➡️ Seamless enough for folks with any level of tech-savviness to navigate on their own,
➡️ Culturally significant for new team members to understand what makes your organization's day-to-day operations unique,
➡️ Thorough and complete so that everyone knows where to find what they need to be successful in their role,
➡️ Informed by feedback so the process keeps improving with every new hire or volunteer, and
➡️ Sustained through check-ins and refreshed trainings.
When staff, board members, and volunteers understand expectations, know where to find what they need and how they fit into the culture from the start, they stay longer, perform better, and feel like they're part of something important--no matter what their role.
If your organization is revisiting onboarding this quarter, what’s one thing you think will make the biggest impact?
