Growing up in Chicago, I worked at my brother’s electrical business so I could stay out of trouble. Sadly, he passed away at the young age of 54, and I had no way to practice the trade he taught me to love. My vocational path took me into welding and forms at PERI USA for six years where I learned a lot of building skills. I also picked up a part-time job at True Value where I became knowledgeable about so many household items that I began to install them at customers’ homes. These positions showed me that I was very good with my hands. No matter what projects came my way, though, electrical work was still my first love.

I reached out for electrical work and landed a position with an inspector. He taught me about coding and how to make every project look perfect. He referred me to large home rehab work and then to Penco Electrical, where I installed generators for two years. I must say I loved every minute. What convinced me to leave was an opportunity of a lifetime—Golden Gloves Nationals.

My father was Muhammad Ali’s sparring partner, so I always wanted to box. When I wasn’t working, I was boxing. I had a lot of success, too, even to the extent of winning the Chicago Golden Gloves. But when I was faced with taking a shot at Nationals, I didn’t have enough vacation time. I had to let my job go. I made it to the finals but did not take it all. It was the experience of a lifetime. No regrets.

On my return, I worked at Mr. Mighty Electric. While there I honed my electrical skills, finished my intense study and testing, and received my Electrical Technician certification.
