It’s Thursday and we’re feeling a Throwback!

Ten years ago, we partnered with Precast on a Redi-Rock project for the Cobb County Department of Transportation in Marietta, GA.

We replaced the original cast-in-place concept with a redesign that hit 15-foot heights without external reinforcement and stayed within the construction limits. The delivery of our value-engineering alternative cut costs, reduced complexity, and ultimately won approval.

Designing retaining walls is never as simple as stacking blocks.

The cross-section shows the hidden complexity behind a large precast concrete block wall when holding back an unstable slope.

Geotechnical borings revealed competent bedrock below the slope, with colluvial soils sitting just above it. These soils are prone to sliding, so to mitigate that risk our team used benched shot rock fill to steepen the crest slope to the desired grade. With the wall embedded in the deeper competent bedrock, the entire wall/slope solution provided the necessary buttress to stabilize the entire hillside.

Sometimes a wall can’t do it all, but smart design can.

When space is tight and the budget is tighter, smart design solutions are crucial.

Initially designed as cast-in-place, our team engineered an alternative Redi-Rock radius wall to support the limestone cut behind a hotel. The 12.5-foot-tall gravity design resulted in a more cost-effective solution with a faster installation.

Here's an inside look at our design for a retaining wall along Daisy Lane in New Albany, IN. Check out the impressive difference it shows after EIGHT years of service.

Using Redi-Rock's Positive Connection system, our team engineered long-term stability for a 5,600-square-foot structure supporting significant grade changes. With geogrid reinforcement, we were able to confidently stack 28" units to a maximum height of 22.5-feet to deliver a durable and cost-effective solution.

JC Hines & Associates designed four wing walls to support the embankment of a span bridge over a man-made canal in Madison, MS.

Given the 21-foot wall-heights and poor soil conditions (highly expansive clay), Redi-Rock’s PC system would help our project designers improve stability on the wing walls. Soldier piles would support a reinforced concrete foundation below the walls and coarse sand backfill was used to provide necessary shear strength and adequate drainage.

With clear design drawings and accurate material quantities, the install crew was able to finish the entire bridge structure in less than a month.

A burrito you can’t order at Chipotle…🌯

Reports from the geotechnical engineers confirmed native clay soils with marginal shear strength on site. Tight property lines meant geogrid reinforcement wasn’t feasible, so to satisfy factors of safety, this 5,000 square-foot wall demanded strong structural footing… Enter the Geotextile Burrito!

This improved undercut method consists of woven stabilization fabric wrapped around crushed stone fill with biaxial geogrid layered between every 12-inches of the stone. The Geotextile Burrito steadies the leveling pad, resulting in improved bearing capacity and global (overall) stability.

We know it doesn’t sound very tasty, but it was the right solution for these challenging circumstances.

🚨 THE GROVE – PHASE 10 🚨

Ten walls were designed for Phase 10 at The Grove in Williamson County, TN – the most interesting of which is a 24,000 square foot 3-tier wall system that supports new housing lots above. 🏘️

The tiered system, founded in limestone bedrock, relies on the reinforcement capabilities of Redi-Rock’s Positive Connection (PC) system. The final height of the combined tier section reaches 34.5 feet with the top 2 blocks on each wall left without geogrid reinforcement to make space for landscaping trees and shrubs to naturalize the wall section.

Also designed in Phase 10 were a pair of gravity walls that function to stabilize land for the neighborhood to enjoy a community park and garden. Both walls implement 90° corners 📐 — an easy design feature to engineer and install with Redi-Rock corner units.

🚨PROJECT SERIES – THE GROVE🚨

Welcome to The Grove, a massive development in Williamson County, TN featuring NINETEEN Redi-Rock retaining walls designed by JC Hines & Associates. In partnership with Redi-Rock KIT, we tackled four unique project phases—each with its own design challenges and engineering solutions. The Grove stands as one of our most ambitious and exciting projects to date.

✅Approximately 102,740 sq ft of total wall face.
🗽Redi-Rock KIT manufactured over 16,000 blocks, weighing in at 25.25 million lbs. (imagine 45 Statues of Liberty)!

⚠Curious how it all came together? Follow along as we share design insights into each phase throughout August!

📍 Century Farms - Nashville, TN

✔️ Founded in solid rock – the walls reach a maximum height of 32 ft.
✔️ Total area of 22,400+ sq ft - stabilized with PC geogrid strip reinforcement.
✔️ The design incorporates vertical slip joints at the limits of the TDOT slab bridge to mitigate potential differential settlement between the stone leveling pad of the wall and the concrete footing of the slab bridge.

Completed in 2024 this project posed a distinct design challenge - accessing the construction site required building a bridge to transport materials and equipment.

Spanning a Contech BridgeCor Single Radius Arch drainage structure, the bridge was supported by back-to-back Redi-Rock PC walls designed to withstand heavy live loads.

✅Redi-Rock blocks with 7½-inch shear k***s = near-vertical batter wall face.
✅Custom-cut fascia panels were implemented to fit the BridgeCor Single Radius Arch.
✅Max wall height (35 ft) was designed to support the weight of fully loaded CAT 777 Off-Highway Trucks. (180 tons.)
