Ever had your machine start throwing a tension tantrum after sewing well? Could you link its origins back to one noisy stop due to sewing something thick and bulky?
Needle strikes can be more than just cosmetic -- they can cause your thread to have more drag, or otherwise get snagged and stop moving entirely.

The BEST way to prevent this from happening is to be smart about how many layers you feed through your machine and at what speed. If you can reduce layer bulk safely, consider it. Seam jumpers can be useful tools as well. Above all, go slowly (or even turn by hand for a few stitches) if there is no way to improve a seam. This can let you feel resistance better and stop before there's a real problem. Modern machines may have neat sensors, but they're no match for human logic.

Happy Trails!
This pair of 1975 Husqvarna Viking 6440 sewing machines made their way home today at long last. One machine held great sentimental value, the other was purchased with the intent to be a parts donor. As luck would have it... they both wound up functioning! We did buy two new reproduction parts to get there (cam stacks are notorious on these Vikings), but they're stitching pretty now.

Did you know: The client's original machine was purchased new *at a student discount* for about $750. When adjusting for inflation, that would be over $4,600 today!
I don't know for sure what they went for without the student discount (one account I found said $1,200), but these were high end models and I fully understand my client's desire to have hers fixed 🥹

How did you do for Me Made May if you were participating?
Did you make new garments? Did you change your needle every six or eight hours of sewing, or when you notice it sounding more "thuddy"? (Nudge nudge, if not...)

I'm happily team heart react on this one, but I didn't quite make my personal goal of something handmade every day I left the house. More to improve on next year!

How has gone for you? Have you been concentrating on wearing your past makes more? Or making new garments to stock your homemade wardrobe?

Personally, I've had a *lot* going on, but I did manage to get my planned skirt finished. I upcycled some twin size cotton IKEA duvet covers into a beautiful full-circle Coquelicot Skirt (View B) from Wildflower Designs. This is my second Coquelicot Skirt and I am still in love with the design's flexibility and hidden POCKETS. I've also been rocking a short sleeved Canyon Top from Friday Pattern Co. frequently -- what a fun and satisfying top to make!

Both my skirt and top were sewn on my early '70s vintage White sewing machine with my modern computerized Brother set up on the next table handling overlocking duty on all raw edges.

I'd love to know what you've been wearing, making, and which machines helped you get there!
