For your Monday ASMR needs, let's take a 1939 Singer Featherweight for a spin around a buttonhole!
This mechanical Singer buttonholer lets you choose your buttonhole size and shape (straight or keyhole), then does the work for you after it has been installed. Just like computerized buttonholes are moved by the built-in feed dogs, the mechanical buttonholer takes care of the directionality for you, even on a straight stitch-only machine.

Note: This is not meant to be a complete tutorial video, just to give a glimpse at how easy it is to use a vintage buttonholer.

Aside from a serviced lightweight sewing machine and necessary thread... what is in your travel sewing case?

Whether you're helping someone mend something, taking a class, or having a craft night with friends, what items do you refuse to make your sewing machine travel without?

Shown in my kit: Straight pins, water soluble marker, seam gauge and magnetic seam guide, embroidery scissors, spare bobbins, seam ripper, machine needles, hand sewing needles, and a screwdriver.

Other great options: Your machine's manual, chalk, mini iron and felt pad, thread stand if you use crosswound thread, tweezers, machine oil, cutting implements and travel cutting mat, small ruler, thimble, clips, etc.

As AI makes its way into everything we do (hate that), I need to make this perfectly clear: I will NEVER use Generative AI while operating as The Mended Machine.

I won't send you generated emails that don't cover your questions. I won't make fake images that seem too good to be true. I won't have a robot spit out social media ideas, which is why I sometimes have quiet spells in my marketing. And NEVER will I consult with a bot on the best approach to your problem. I have mentors and acquaintances I can bounce ideas off when needed and they're WAY more likely to get it right than a delusional chat bot is.

Photos? Mine or stock.
Post text? Straight from my brain into my fingertips.
Emails? Painstakingly written (and often way too wordy) to address your specific concerns. There are occasionally templates used. Or responses on timers, like my FB Messenger which fires off an "I'll get back to you" response when messaged outside of work hours. But I wrote those myself, and I will continue to do so.

It does mean I won't always put out polished stuff. But my work is all my own.
I never want someone to question if my response is computer-vomited drivel or straight from the brain of the person who would do the work.
It's the latter. Every time.

Do you keep records on what all you do to maintain your machine? Keep receipts from trips in for service? Have you started tracking any of these services digitally?
Shops used to place service stickers on machines, but it has fallen out of favor. Do you miss the physical reminder, or did that sticker with last service date make you feel guilty? If only they made easily removable stickers like we get for car oil changes!

Instead of marking up my machines, I'm trying to get better about keeping a mini notebook with my primary use machines to record full services, quick oils/cleans, and any parts replaced.

Here's a "Wednesday Wow!" for you...
1912 Singer 127 treadle machine showing off a beautiful specimen of the "Sphinx" decal pattern.
This machine was dusty and grimy but cleaned up stunning. Shows a little bit of age/use as expected for 114 years, but that sphinx still shines! ✨

Ever wonder what a tech would look for in a vintage machine before purchasing?
I put together a few cheat sheets on things to watch for. It isn't all-encompassing, but it will get you darn close! There's generic things to check on any vintage machine, special things to watch for on certain brands, and non-negotiables on common desirable models.

Please note the focus of this list is early 1900s through mid-60s Singers, Pfaffs into the early '70s, plus 1950s-70s Kenmore and Japanese makes. These are my selections because they are common, quality makes, and a functional one is well worth the effort to shine it up.

I will always recommend a fresh service when you don't know how long a vintage machine has sat for, but watching for these elements will get you closest to a ready-to-sew vintage machine.

So as to not blow up your feeds weekly with my schedule when most of the time it remains static, I'm switching to a monthly calendar for availability and showing my flex/odd days. This month is pretty straightforward: M/W/Th hours as usual, one flex Friday.
