2018 LG French door refrigerator. Customer states that another company told him he needed a compressor, but doesn't replace them.
Compressor was still covered under a 10 year manufacturer part warranty, so a replacement was shipped to the homeowner. I was called out to install the replacement.
Upon arrival, I found a mostly cold refrigerator, complete with full ice bin. When I pulled the fridge, I was immediately hit with a blast of heat and noticed the rear grille completely caked in dust.
After further discussion with the homeowner, it was revealed that the previous "tech" only went into diagnostic mode and found a code for an overheating compressor. Without pulling the refrigerator to see if there was a cause for overheating, he wrote it off as a bad compressor.
Within 5 minutes of having the grille off, the machine compartment was dramatically cooler. Now that the grille and condenser are clean, the refrigerator will fully function as intended.
While it's true that 90% of LG refrigerators not cooling are caused by bad compressors, there is no excuse for hack work and not taking the extra few minutes for a visual inspection to make sure there isn't a problem with airflow.
