I had a colleague who once took out the book, Recruitment and Retaining Employees for Dummies and we all laughed, but when we looked at the first bullet point under retention, we stopped laughing. It suggested that managers should ask their people if they plan to stay. Often we stay away from conversations if we are unsure how they will go a and so few of our managers were ever asked that question themselves. But if we are committed to the people we spent so much time hiring, we have to start the conversation and listen to what they have to say.

We are no longer surprised talking to potential clients in the non profit space when they tell us they are in the process of negotiating their first collective bargaining agreement because staff have elected to unionize. We aren't even surprised when those organizations have less than 10 people in total. Whether this is happening because unions' favorable ratings are up in the US, because this next generation is more comfortable with activism, or something entirely different, we aren't sure, but we are seeing it quite a bit. The reality is that non profit leaders shouldn't be assuming that a union is out of the question for their organization.

That first collective bargaining agreement will lay the foundation for the relationship between a union and management, so it is critical. Making room to think about negotiations as a collaborative process, but also understanding anything that is in the agreement may have a negative impact down the line is a tough space to stand in.

We are squarely in graduation season - a time for the older generations to impart words of wisdom to graduating seniors across the country. But it has us thinking, should we be maybe listening a little more to what our recent graduates are saying and advise a little less? One stat that really stuck with us was employer reputation playing a� key role in graduating seniors’ application decisions. 75% read reviews of an employer before applying, and 73% would be more likely to apply after seeing additional behind-the scenes content from an employer.

1. Stop and think about the greatest manager or leader you ever worked for. Could even be a sports coach or teacher.

2. Now, think about, while working with that person, how was your performance?

3. And what did they do to bring out your strengths as an employee?

4. Final thought experiment, if your answer to #3 was attributes that empowered you, that made you feel trusted to get to a clear outcome, that gave you ownership of your work, are we getting accountability and directive management wrong? Are we jumping too quickly to micro-managing instead of stopping and asking what our people need instead of telling them?

Maybe that person you thought of in #1 has some answers. Reach out and let them know how their modeling shaped your leadership.
