In a Medical Laboratory Observer article, Dr. Mark Stovsky, Chief Medical Officer of Cleveland Diagnostics, explored the importance of a comprehensive diagnostic evaluation for prostate cancer.

He describes a pathway that begins with PSA testing and incorporates ancillary testing, imaging, and biopsy, all providing complementary information that helps clinicians select the next step that best reflects the individual patient.

According to Dr. Stovsky, ancillary testing “may help refine the likelihood that a patient has clinically significant disease, while imaging can provide information about the prostate’s anatomy and identify areas that may warrant closer evaluation. These findings can be interpreted alongside the patient’s age, family history, physical examination, PSA history, and other clinical factors.”

Cancer screening is about more than finding cancer, according to Dr. Jason Hafron, Chief Medical Officer at the Michigan Institute of Urology. It’s also about understanding what happens when a result raises concern but ultimately does not indicate clinically significant disease.

A recent OncLive interview with Dr. Hafron explores the real cost of false-positive findings, including patient anxiety, additional testing, invasive procedures, and financial and time burdens.

In prostate cancer, an elevated PSA can be the start of a diagnostic cascade even though many elevated PSA results are not associated with clinically significant disease.

However, diagnostic tools like the IsoPSA Test can improve risk stratification and help physicians and patients make more informed decisions about what comes next.

PSA testing is an essential part of prostate cancer detection, but interpreting PSA results can be anything but straightforward.

In a recent episode of BackTable Urology, Dr. Tarik Benidir from the University of Florida discusses the complexities of PSA and the challenges clinicians face when deciding what an elevated result really means.
