❓ Have you ever had to terminate or lay off an employee, and it didn’t go as you planned?

Terminating an employee can be difficult and if not thoroughly planned out, it can be costly. When I say costly, I mean more than legal lawsuits. I am talking about negatively impacting the company’s reputation, diminishing company culture you have worked so hard to develop, poor employee morale, increased turnover and many other factors that negatively impact the company’s bottom line.

Join me on Tuesday, September 29th where I will discuss how to properly terminate an employee with dignity and avoid the negativity.

🚨 A Middle-of-the-Night Safety Reminder 🚨

Nothing gets your heart racing quite like a smoke detector going off in the middle of the night! 😳

At 2:00 AM, our smoke detector decided it was time for an unexpected wake-up call. After checking everything out, it turns out the culprit was likely the high humidity. Luckily it was just a false alarm. I was talking with a client in France who was telling me all about the devastating fires going on in France right now, people are losing their homes. It got me thinking as to how lucky we were last night and realizing the importance of having working smoke detectors.

With all of that, what really made me proud was seeing my boys put safety into action. Without hesitation, they woke up, followed our family emergency plan, and headed right outside. As a parent, there's a lot of comfort in knowing that your children understand what to do when an alarm sounds.

It's a good reminder that safety isn't just about having smoke detectors—it's also about making sure everyone in your home knows how to respond when they go off.

✅ Test your smoke detectors regularly
✅ Replace batteries as needed
✅ Check the age of your detectors (most should be replaced every 10 years)
✅ Review your family's emergency plan
✅ Practice what to do in case of a fire

The interrupted sleep wasn't exactly appreciated, but the peace of mind knowing our detectors work and my boys knew exactly what to do was well worth it.

When it comes to safety, preparation matters.

Burnout doesn’t always look like exhaustion.

Sometimes it looks like:
✅Fewer ideas in meetings
✅ More “I’m fine” responses
✅High performers doing the bare minimum

Quiet burnout is a culture signal—not a personal failure.

HR’s role isn’t to push resilience harder. But HR does play a critical role in preventing, identifying, and addressing employee burnout. Managers should always be the first line of defense and should be identifying employee burnout. Managers should be partnering with HR to create the policies, programs, and support systems that truly help and support employees maintain well-being, eliminate burnout, and increase engagement.

🔑 The key is just that, identifying what will help employees and not just putting a program into place because you think it will work. Talk to your employees through 1x1;s, stay interviews, employee surveys and even just a simple conversation makes a difference. Communication is the key to any relationship whether it’s work or personal.

📉 75% of industries are seeing an increase in voluntary turnover from their best employees this year. Source from Linkedin.

Read that again.

It's not the low performers leaving — it's your high-potential talent. And when they go, they take institutional knowledge, client relationships, and team momentum with them.

So what's driving it?

Most often: a lack of career growth visibility. Employees don't just want a job. They want a path.

If your organization can't answer "Where can I be in 3 years here?" — your competition will answer for you.

3 retention moves worth making right now:
→ Map internal mobility pathways and actually communicate them
→ Train managers to have honest career conversations (not just performance reviews)
→ Use exit interview data to find the patterns before they become the crisis

Retention isn't an HR problem. It's a leadership priority.

What's your organization doing to keep top talent engaged? I'd love to hear what's working.

📬 When Feedback Falls Flat: Lessons from the Suggestion Box

A client recently shared an experience: they set up an anonymous “suggestion box” to give employees a safe space for feedback. The goal? Encourage honesty and transparency.

The reality? No one took it seriously. The box was full of jokes and funny notes. While it sparked laughter, it didn’t deliver the meaningful insights they hoped for.

When this happens most companies give up and never ask the insightful questions to ensure they are making strategic decisions that aid in the growth, development, and happiness of their employees.

Why does this happen?
✅ Employees may doubt anonymity.
✅ Lack of follow-up makes feedback feel pointless.
✅ Outdated methods don’t match today’s workplace culture.

Getting honest feedback requires trust, strategy, and action—not just a box.

👉 HR Complete Solutions can help you find the best way to gather meaningful feedback and turn insights into real improvements. Contact us today!

✨ Real Talk from an HR Consultant ✨

Today was one of those “this is why customization matters” moments.

I was sitting with a client, reviewing their employee handbook line by line, when we both started to notice something… parts of it just didn’t sound like them.

The reason?
Those sections were pulled straight from a legal template. Technically correct ✅ — but culturally off ❌

And here’s the thing:
A handbook isn’t just a compliance document. It’s a reflection of your company’s voice, values, and day-to-day reality.

Yes, legal templates are a great starting point (they keep you protected 👏), but they’re not the finish line. Turning that template into something that truly fits your business… that takes time, collaboration, and thoughtful tailoring.

💡 The magic happens when you blend:
• Legal compliance
• Clear communication
• Authentic company culture

That’s when a handbook stops being a document employees have to read… and becomes one they actually connect with.
