Let’s talk about UDL… Universal Design for Learning! Did you know that UDL has been around for approximately 40 years!The concept began taking shape in the 1980s through the work of CAST (Center for Applied Special Technology), which was founded in 1984.

One of the biggest misconceptions I see in education is that we have to wait until a student struggles before we start thinking about how to support them.

But what if we planned for learner differences from the very beginning?!

THAT is where UDL comes in!

Universal Design for Learning (UDL) is about intentionally designing learning experiences that reduce barriers and provide ALL students with meaningful opportunities to learn.

UDL is built around THREE principles:

ENGAGEMENT… The WHY of learning!
How do we spark interest, build motivation, and help students stay engaged?

REPRESENTATION… The WHAT of learning!
How do we present information in different ways so students can access and understand it?

ACTION & EXPRESSION… The HOW of learning!
How do we give students different ways to demonstrate what they know and can do?

And here is something I want educators to remember…

UDL is NOT about lowering expectations!

It is about removing unnecessary barriers while maintaining high expectations for ALL learners.

It is also NOT the same thing as specially designed instruction (SDI). UDL strengthens the learning environment for everyone… while SDI addresses the individualized instructional needs of students with disabilities.

One of my FAVORITE resources for learning more about UDL is CAST, the organization behind the UDL Guidelines!

Their website has research, practical resources, and the UDL Guidelines to help educators start thinking differently about how we design instruction.

Remember… Accessibility should be part of the PLAN… not something we add AFTER a student struggles!

If you’ve ever met Nolyn, you know you’re in for a treat! ❤️

14 years ago, she made me a mom. But what I never expected was just how much she would shape the educator and advocate I would become.

For years, I approached transition services through the lens of an educator. I understood the laws, the processes, the paperwork, and the importance of preparing students for life after high school.

But becoming the parent sitting on the other side of the ARD table changed everything.

Suddenly, transition planning wasn’t just about compliance, goals, or services. It was about MY child’s future. Her dreams. Her independence. Her voice.

Nolyn has given me the opportunity to see education through three very different perspectives… the educator, the parent, and the self-advocate.

She’s taught me that advocacy isn’t just about knowing what to fight for. It’s about understanding WHY you’re fighting.

She’s challenged me to ask harder questions, listen more intentionally, and never forget the families behind the paperwork.

And perhaps most importantly, she’s reminded me that meaningful transition planning isn’t something we do FOR students. It’s something we build WITH them.

Happy 14th birthday to the girl who made me a mom, challenged everything I thought I knew, and continues to make me a better human, educator, and advocate. ❤️
