I was in Nashville last year for a cheer competition with my daughter and we stayed in a condo that was basically a love letter 🩷 🦋 to Dolly Parton.

A print on the wall read:
“Pour Yourself a Cup of Ambition.”

But today I feel the more appropriate phrase to describe her life is:
“𝑷𝒐𝒖𝒓 𝒀𝒐𝒖𝒓𝒔𝒆𝒍𝒇 𝒂 𝑪𝒖𝒑 𝒐𝒇 𝑷𝒆𝒓𝒎𝒊𝒔𝒔𝒊𝒐𝒏.”

“𝑾𝒉𝒂𝒕 𝑫𝒐 𝒀𝒐𝒖 𝑫𝒐 𝒐𝒏 𝒂 𝑺𝒂𝒕𝒖𝒓𝒅𝒂𝒚?”

That was the question one of my client’s got at dinner after day one of his team’s leadership workshop. Not while he was in the “hot seat.” Not even during a structured break. It came over a cold brew, in one of those beautifully human moments where leadership gets less polished and more real. And to me, that question said a lot. It said this employee wasn’t just curious about his boss’s calendar. He was trying to understand the person behind the title. What restores you? Who are you when the KPIs are not on the screen? It got me asking myself the same question, and realizing [once again], that how we show up Monday thru Friday doesn’t determine the kind of leader or coach we are; it’s everything that happens on the days in between that really shine a light on what we value the most.
