What’s everyone’s favorite outcross for barrel horses?

An outcross is the source of hybrid vigor, a combination of different genetics that lead to a superior individual. For the barrel racing industry, it’s largely been the result of racing lines and working lines, like the reining- and cutting-bred Biebers Oakie on the Judge Cash mare Lady Kaweah Cash to get the immortal An Oakie With Cash — best known as Lisa Lockhart’s “Louie.”

So far, barrel horses haven’t had the genetic issues like cutters have had with the horrific skin disease HERDA. Although it isn’t near on the scale as HERDA was and isn’t well-documented, some barrel racers have been concerned that exertional issues (tying up) may be one of the few genetic problems they have to face.

Barrel racers are largely looking for outcrosses for two reasons — economics and intrigue.
