Sometimes children act out because they do not yet have the words to explain what they are feeling.

At Healing Out Loud on October 3, Gamma Tau Epsilon Sorority,. will lead our third annual reading of The Color Monster—helping children connect feelings with colors:

💛 Happy
💙 Sad
❤️ Angry
💚 Calm
🖤 Scared
🩷 Loved

Naming an emotion does not make it bigger. It helps children understand it, talk about it, and learn healthy ways to manage it.

Bring your family to the Martin Luther King Branch Library for an afternoon of connection, education, and community support.

Question of the day

If your feelings had a color today, what color would they be—and why?

☀️ Good morning and happy Thursday from DeVotions HomeCare!

Today’s reminder: Morning care is also about noticing changes.

👀 Pay attention to:
• Pacing or walking in circles
• Repeatedly walking back and forth
• New balance problems or dragging a foot
• Changes in mood, appetite or routine

Encourage safe independence—let them help prepare breakfast, pour their coffee with supervision, choose their clothes or enjoy a gentle morning stretch.

For an easier grip, try an adaptive cup or utensil with a nonslip handle. If swallowing medication is difficult, ask the pharmacist before crushing it or mixing it with applesauce—some medicines must remain whole.

🚨 Sudden foot-dragging, facial drooping, weakness or slurred speech may be a stroke. Call 911.

What simple morning task does your loved one still enjoy doing independently? 💜

💜 Caregiver Talk: Parenting Your Parent When They Become Combative

One of the hardest parts of caregiving is caring for the person who once cared for you especially when they become angry, resistant, or combative.

Sometimes the behavior isn’t personal. It may come from fear, confusion, pain, frustration, medication changes, or feeling like they have lost control.

In difficult moments:

• Keep your voice calm and give them space.
• Avoid arguing or trying to prove them wrong.
• Acknowledge their feelings and redirect the conversation.
• Offer simple choices so they can maintain some independence.
• Step away briefly if everyone is safe.
• Contact their healthcare provider if the behavior is new or worsening.

And caregivers, please remember: protecting your own physical and emotional well-being does not mean you are giving up on your loved one. You deserve patience, support, rest, and a safe place to talk too.

Parenting your parent can feel heartbreaking, exhausting, and lonely—but you are not alone. 💜
