Juneteenth & Frog Friday!

Two good reasons to celebrate this week.

We’ll see you at Highlands Park, from 8-9pm for wetland fun and exploration!

You’d be hard pressed to find a bigger plant with a less conspicuous flower that attracts this many pollinators.

Meet Great Angelica (Angelica atropurpurea). This massive wet meadow forb shoots up to 6+ feet in late spring, towering above other vegetation. Each tiny green flower is loaded with nectar, which is what all the buzz is about 🐝

And it’s not just for the bees- birds love it too!

…wow, we do not plan these puns.

Spring and summer nesting birds regularly call from the tops of last year’s standing stems. In the fall, each flower is replaced by a large seed that is a sought after snack by resident and migratory birds.

Even you can enjoy this plant, as most parts are edible! It’s in the carrot family, Apiaceae. Do NOT mix it up with Poison Hemlock, as they can grow side by side and look similar in stalk and leaf. Poison Hemlock will have purple speckles on its stem, while Angelica has solid (or streaky) purple and green stems.

When you’re on a turtle survey, but also a fish biologist…

Corbin Binkley is a talented angler and our fisheries scientist who has a knack for spotting fish wherever there’s water. Check out this Bowfin (Amia calva) he found while surveying Lake Erie marshes last week!

These predatory fish are the sole member of their family, having changed little since their evolution during the Jurassic Period. Because of their specialized swim bladder, they can obtain oxygen through their gills and atmospheric air, so you may see them breaching the surface to gulp air in waters with low dissolved oxygen.

Watch closely to see the golden eye spot on their tail fin 👀

Double the fun this Friday!

We’ll be combining the Wetland Workshop and Frog Friday this week, so rather than one hour, we have two hours of wetland fun.

Exploration will be limited during the Workshop (7-8pm) so that the wetland doesn’t get trampled. We’ll have several tables setup for you to learn about ecosystem functions, see wetland wildlife, and do a craft.

We’ll do an introduction promptly at 7pm and another at 8pm under the white tent.

The weather looks fantastic. Bring dinner and picnic on the lawn or the shelter before the program for some extra outdoor time.

The H2Ohio-funded Funk-Dewald site is officially open to the public!

Mark and Dan attended the official ribbon-cutting ceremony to share a few comments about our restoration approach and help lead a site tour.

This project (approximately 40 acres) reconnected and enhanced two large forested wetland parcels. Multiple acres of wetland pools with varying hydroperiods were excavated at site. These are expected to form wet meadow, vernal pool, emergent marsh, and additional forested wetland habitats. After the construction was complete, over 2,300 trees were installed and native seed mixes were applied. Invasive plants (both herbaceous and woody) continue to be treated.

We’re proud of the work that’s been done here and hope that it will serve as an example of successful projects that contribute to water quality improvements, public education, recreation, and wildlife habitat.

Thanks to Ohio Department of Natural Resources Ohio Division of Natural Areas and Preserves Heidelberg University and Seneca County Park District for hosting!
