Please take a few minutes to read about this most important subject and the latest improvements over the last several years. Many studies have shown that seriously ill cancer patients often live longer and have a better quality of life if the are enrolledin one of these programs sooner rather than later. Also, being enrolled in one of these programs does not mean that the patient's life expectancy is six. months or less. Eligibility for palliative or hospice care is solely dependent on whether or not the patient's health meets the criteria for admission. In my book, Aging in Place -- Navigating the Maze of Long Term Care, I tell the story of my friend Florence, who was a hospice patient for more than three years. Also, if a patient's condition improves, he or she may graduate from the program and may later be readmitted if the situation changes. I invite you to joiin my private Facebook Group, Mary's Caring Community, to read more posts containing valuable information involving many aspects of the aging process and the disease of dementia.

Palliative care and hospice care are both designed to target special attention on symptom management and quality of life.

This is a picture of my friend Beatrice and me. She and I have been friends since 1989. During most of our friendship Beatrice has suffered from varying degrees of Parkinson’s disease. Through prayer, encouragement from her friends and relatives, and in the last two years great support from a fantastic in-home health care team, she is living her best life and getting ready to celebrate her 82nd birthday tomorrow. Along with prayer, great care and effective communication with healthcare professionals makes all the difference. Even though she is not on Facebook, please join me in wishing her a happy birthday.

My 91 year old mother-in-law, Jessie Louise, was living alone and not sharing the fact that her vision was greatly impaired. After falling, breaking a hip and spending time in a nursing home, she admitted that she could not see. The family worked together to facilitate her getting the necesary cataract surgery. After being discharged from the nursing home (which she hated) she then spent the remainder of her life in a private board and care with more socialization (and sight) than she had experienced in decades. Her improved vision along with increased social engagement resulted in cognitive improvement and a renewed lease on life.

New research reveals that addressing vision loss may help stave off dementia and Alzheimer’s disease, the most common form of dementia.
