Let’s talk about some leadership myths that quietly keep women nonprofit leaders exhausted:

✨ “If you care, you’ll give more.”
✨ “Strong leaders push through no matter what.”
✨ “Setting boundaries means you’re less committed.”

None of these are true.

Caring doesn’t require depletion.
Strength includes rest and reflection.
Boundaries protect your capacity to lead well.

This is something many women nonprofit leaders feel guilty admitting.

I want to say something that many women nonprofit leaders need to hear:

Burnout is not a personal failure.

If you’re exhausted, it’s not because you’re weak, uncommitted, or “doing it wrong.”

Most of the women I work with are capable, values-driven leaders who care deeply about their missions. They’re burned out because they’re operating inside systems that quietly expect self-sacrifice as the norm.

Long hours.
Emotional labor.
Always being the steady one.

That takes a toll.

You don’t need to leave leadership to feel better.
You need a way of leading that doesn’t cost you yourself.

Steps Toward Balance
