How big is $258 billion? Incomprehensible. It's difficult to grasp the scale of that number. But data analytics, data visualization, some creativity, and nearly 6 million pinto beans can help. Let's get to the bottom of this. Sources in comments.

We’ve done over 250 data analytics projects. Oftentimes, we’re fixing data projects that have gone sideways before we are brought in. We’ve seen the good, the bad, and the ugly.

Avoid the tar pits. Get your project done right and find multi-millions of dollars in return.

The expectation to be data-driven, especially involving business decisions, has been around for a while.

But the majority of employees still aren't comfortable using that data for their decision-making.

Coworkers can make a huge difference in helping you focus on becoming more data-driven. Ask questions like, "why do you recommend that?" or "what is driving this trend?" that carry the data-driven culture forward.

Keep asking questions. Keep moving forward.

This is not a political post.

This is an admiration post for a visual and survey conducted by GradientMetrics.

Couple of things we liked about this.

First, is the use of pre-attentive attributes.
-Smart use of colors both in the title and on the chart
-The "Average" callout shows where to baseline the issues
-They have removed everything from the chart so that you focus on what matters most, the data

Second, we appreciate the methodology behind the study.

Surveys are fickle things. People often gloss over the questions and it can be an imperfect tool to gather data.

However, GradientMetrics used a MaxDiff model to better hone the questions, making the data gathered more relevant. They do a better explanation of it than we can so we'll leave you with the URL below.

This is brilliant work. Asking the right questions in the right way makes the data relevant and the insights applicable. People are worried about inflation and the economy over any other political issue going into these midterms.

One sentence or less.

That's all it takes for a person to feel like a complete fool if you speak to them in your field's jargon.

Our opinion is to know your material so well you can relate it, or simplify it, to anyone.

-Know your audience
-Speak to them (which can mean both simplifying AND/OR using jargon)
-Relate the Data/Analytics to them (you already know the ins and outs)

Acronyms and impenetrable language: we all know these tendencies aren’t helpful, so why can’t we stop acting on them? It’s a problem for us; it’s a problem for you. No matter what industry you work in, the likelihood is high that industry-specific buzzwords and acronyms...

Beautiful, informative, simple, and elegant.
We are, of course, describing the humble bar chart.

Take time to appreciate this underappreciated beauty in your life.

Quick to make. Easily understood. Powerful in analysis (even though you've seen it a million times).

We had a huge response in March with basic, pretty bar charts: 85 people shared their creations for our SWD Challenge.

15 seconds or less.

When a chart/graph/visualization is placed in front of you and you haven't figured out what is going on in 15 seconds, you get frustrated.

The title is the first piece of the process to knock a chart out of the park.

A good title:
-Narrows your focus onto the context and hopefully, what the author wants you to see from their chart
-Highlights the insight or the "why" of a question
-Inspires action (or inaction) based on the data being presented

A bad title:
-Fails to simplify the chart
-Forces the viewer to think more than they would like (this can be a good thing in many instances)

A question can drive the conversation better than a call out of the two axis being portrayed.

Example (a very watered down example), simply labeling Sales by Marketing Channel is only reiterating what the axis already states!
Bring some analysis into the picture by asking questions about the chart!

Questions or situations that allow us to project our beliefs or expectation on matters force us to think more critically. In turn, recall can be more accurate and faster the next time we are presented with a similar-looking situation.

This article does a brilliant job of explaining how data visualization and eliciting users' prior beliefs will bring better comprehension, engagement, and understanding of what you are trying to say in your report/visualization.

TLDR: It’s natural to bring our relevant prior knowledge on a topic to how we interpret visualized data. Interactive visualizations can…

-Random quote we googled for this post.

Try to tell a story next time you are asked to report your findings from a dataset. Stories provide context, plot, and the main contributors/factors from the data.

If you use a visual analytics tool-give this article a read. The author highlights 7 Different Types of Data Stories.

We personally like #5-Explore the Intersection

What makes a story truly data-driven? For one, the numbers aren’t caged in a sidebar graph. Instead, the data helps drive the narrative. Data can help narrate as many types of stories as there are angles. My colleague Ben Jones of Tableau Public inspired me to think of data stories as seven differ...
