Just Do It! Jump In

Thomas Bandy, author of Coaching Change, shares a story about a group of penguins wanting to jump into the water but are reluctant to do so because of fear that there may be a predator lurking beneath the surface. To determine if the water is safe, one of the penguins has to make a decision, and that decision is to jump in --to be the first.

On any given day, the decision we make as leaders can be likened to penguin behavior--particularly when we are not sure of the outcome of if others will be onboard. But, isn’t this what being an effective and courageous leader is all about?

You assess a situation. Consider the pros and cons. In the end, however, you have to make a decision. The direction, perhaps even the fate of others rest in you seizing the opportunity. After all, courage is not made up of the absence of fear. It is the judgment that something else is more important.

Be the first penguin. Just do it. Jump in and others will follow.

The Unthinkable

Can you imagine being one of the 396 young men who sat listening to the commencement speaker, Mr. Robert F. Smith, on yesterday? Initially, you may have been struck by a sense of boredom and wondering when your name would be called so that you could lay claim to that long awaited diploma. You may have sat reflecting on all of what you had experienced and/or been exposed to during your tenure as a Morehouse man. Suddenly your ears, eyes, heart and spirit are awakened when you hear the commencement speaker announce that the loans you had accrued during your undergraduate experience, would not only be forgiven but would be paid in its entirety for every graduate in the class of 2019.

Perhaps the initial were shock and disbelief. And maybe the young men, parents, administration, faculty, other family members and anyone else who might have had the occasion to listen in are still pinching themselves and raising the question of whether it was real or not.

My hat, prayers and deep sense of gratitude are extended to Mr. Smith for doing what clearly can be referred to as the unthinkable. Mr. Smith could have simply given a 'nice' speech and gone on his merry way but instead, he considered the scripture found in Luke 12:48, "To whom much is given, shall be much required." Mr. Smith gave much on yesterday (an estimated $40 million) to completely liquidate any debt accrued by those who dared to step out on their dream and a promise that by pursuing and completing their degrees, that their lives would be made better. Thank God for individuals such as Mr. Robert F. Smith who chose not to sit on their laurels and their wealth. Rather, they chose to reinvest in freeing up individuals to begin their careers with promise beyond measure and can make career decisions without fear of how they will be able to pay back loans which undoubtedly would be in the thousands of dollars.

May each individual who received this liberal gift, understand that they now have the responsibility to pay it forward. May they see what liberation, grace, and love are really all about. This is what it truly means to 'Make America (humanity) great again. Praise God for the Mr. Smiths of this world who give of their time, talent, gifts and possessions. Granted, not all of us can give money of this magnitude but we can give something. We can invest in the generations that will follow us. We can make the unthinkable....not only thinkable but REAL!

Coaching for Abundant Living

I recently read a tag posted by lifehack.com that said, “… If you weren’t happy with yesterday, try something different today. Don’t stay stuck. Do better!” Living life to its fullest, is all about doing better but so often, individuals find themselves in a rut and perceive that there are few options to do better.

As a Certified Professional Life Coach (CPLC), I have made it my business to walk alongside individuals in their quest to get out of the rut, to do better and be better. While coaching is not new, it is surprising that so many individuals who could benefit from the expertise and helping hand that a life coach could provide, are reluctant to consider this as a viable tool to their personal and professional development.

To experience coaching is to experience change. Coaching is about making decisions that are in alignment with God’s will for your life. It is about assessing and evaluating your lifestyle on an ongoing basis and establishing appropriate action to ensure that you build discipline and harmony in your life. Coaching is a tool that can help individuals and organizations alike think beyond the present to envision a future and then figure out the steps that are necessary to get there.

If at times you feel stuck or frustrated and need someone to walk alongside you as you seek to expand your vision, fulfill your dreams, increase your skills, or effectively move through the transitions of life, then coaching is for you. I encourage you to consider this value-added approach (Coaching) to help you to tap into your true self so that you have the clarity you need to make decisions that are right for you.
