There are so many ways to wear Southern Maidenhair Fern! In your shade garden, in a container or in a bouquet! And they have dome beautiful ones in stock at Strickland Ace Hardware, Danielsville!

Adiantum capillus-veneris (Southern Maidenhair Fern)The Southern maidenhair fern (Adiantum capillus-veneris) is native to Georgia, specifically thriving in the southwestern part of the state and some Piedmont counties, often found on limestone bluffs.

It features delicate, light-green fronds on black, wiry stems, preferring partial to full shade and alkaline, moist soil and spreads slowly via creeping rhizomes, making it excellent for rock walls or shady woodland gardens.

Giving a shout out to Puma Yu's not just for their amazing food, but for their sustainable and pollinator-friendly landscape design. They could have very easily used the typical non-native liriope in this border planted, but instead they used native blue-eyed grass, and its really amazing in person. Farm441ga has it in stock!

Blue-eyed grass (Sisyrinchium angustifolium), commonly found in Georgia, is a native perennial in the iris family, not a true grass, featuring star-shaped blue-violet flowers with yellow centers and narrow, blade-like leaves

It thrives in full sun to part shade in moist, well-drained soils, blooming in spring and summer, making it ideal for rock gardens or naturalized landscapes.

Key Characteristics in Georgia
Appearance: Clump-forming, 8–15 inches tall, featuring iris-like, flat foliage and small, vibrant star-shaped flowers.

Habitat: Commonly found in Georgia in damp, open woods, meadows, stream banks, and along slopes.

Bloom Time: Spring to early summer, with potential for continued blooms in ideal conditions

Maintenance: Easy to grow, requires moderate moisture, and can be cut back after flowering to prevent excessive self-seeding

Pollinators: Supports native bees, butterflies, and syrphid flies

Uses in Landscaping
🌱Mass Planting: Excellent for creating a meadow effect.
🌱Border Accents: Adds a delicate touch along walkways.
🌱Containers: Thrives in pots

I'm excited to work on a very fun plant list (and then concept map) for a fall install in South Georgia. Sustainable landscapes FEED the ecosystem, and I can't think of a greater nod to Georgia agriculture and a sustainable landscape design than this native blueberry, Darrow’s blueberry (Vaccinium darrowii). For all of our ag folks, this is an ancestor to the Southern Highbush in commercial production.

Isn't this A LOT more interesting and beneficial than a boxwood?!

Native Habitat: Primarily found in pine forests and flatwoods, often in the Gulf Coast region.

Appearance: This shrub has fine-textured foliage that can have a blush-pink color when new, turning blue-green.

Flowers & Fruit: It produces small, bell-shaped white or pinkish-white flowers in spring, followed by small, edible berriess.

Hardiness & Growth: It is generally hardy in USDA Zones 8–10, with some tolerance for zone 7B. It is drought-tolerant once established and can form colonies.

Landscaping Use: Suitable for native gardens, low hedges, and containers, offering year-round interest.

Soil Needs: Thrives in acidic soil (pH 4.5–5.5) but can tolerate slightly higher, up to 6.2

Isn't life wild? It seems like yesterday, but I had the honor of being these ladies' 4-H Agent in Cordele 13ish years ago. I can't help but be thankful for the organization that brought us together and for Fyzical Therapy & Balance Centers for giving us an excuse to catch up. More on that to come!

It's a peaceful Good Friday on the South Fork of the Broad. With the rain coming in, it's a great time to plant any plant, especially the natives we are reintroducing to this ecosystem. Does anyone else "baptize" your plants before planting? It's a great way to get those roots wet if you won't be able to water frequently.

Nothing says Spring in Georgia like Native Azalea 🌸

Native flame (Rhododendron calendulaceum) and white azaleas (such as R. viscosum or R. alabamense) are deciduous, low-maintenance shrubs offering high-impact, fragrant blooms, superior pollinator support for hummingbirds and bees, and excellent adaptability to local soils. These hardy shrubs thrive in woodland settings, providing early spring color (flame) or summer scent (white) while resisting most pests and diseases.

Unlike dense, evergreen non-native azaleas, native species have an airy, open habit and vibrant, often warm-toned colors (yellow, orange, red) that add natural beauty to woodland landscapes. They are generally free of common pest and disease problems that plague non-native ornamental azaleas.

Concept plan loading for a client (and friend) in South Georgia! A sneak peak below...

Challenges being addressed:
● The soil is sandy and fast draining.
● Hurricane Helene destroyed the pine canopy, so the plant selection must be able to
handle full afternoon sun in the south Georgia heat; however, there is access to
irrigation to help landscape become adjusted.
● While the existing plantings are an excellent structure for the yard, there are little to no
contributions to the local ecosystem. The proposed plants not only have color and
interest year-around, but they will also feed native pollinators. Choosing native plants
that are naturalized for the region will result in a well-adjusted landscape that is
low-maintenance.

Suggested plantings:
● American Beauty Berry
● Kousa Dogwood
● Little Blue Stem Gass
● Baptisia sphaerocarpa
● Indigo spires salvia
● Brown Eyed Susan Goldstrum
● Purple Pow Wow Coneflower
● Allium Bulbs (Giant) - Giganteum

Stay tuned for updates!
