Grass Growth?

It’s been over 100 degrees in this part of Texas for over 30 days. No measurable rain has fallen since these piles of brush were mulched slightly over a month ago. Yet the greenest grasses in the pasture are thriving where the mulch sits. The other grasses still lay dormant due to heat and lack of moisture.

Why?

The mulch acts as a blanket or tarp. Similar to when you go on a camping trip and at the end of the trip the tarp under the tent is usually wet from condensation trapped under the tarp.

The condensation comes from moisture underground that gets trapped under the tarp during the large temperature swings from day and night. It doesn’t get evaporated because the tarp or mulch in this case has the moisture trapped.

These grasses you see actively growing in this photo
are thriving off the trapped moisture during the hottest driest time of the year. Even when all other grasses outside of the mulch lay dormant until rain returns.

How grazing affects grass growth.

If you have cattle you will notice the cattle eating these greenest grasses in mulched areas during this time of year. This can negatively effect recovery and cause an area that has been mulched take longer to recover.

If you let these grasses grow with no grazing pressure especially after the first year and periodically after. You will see significantly healthy grass growth return in these mulched areas.
