Mac-Senior University Mac Senior is Helping Seniors to learn how to use iPad and iPhone, we provide personalized one by one training courses, online tutorials, and video services

Mac-Senior was created to help Seniors understand and know how to use an iPad, an iPhone and a Mac computer in the way that works for them the best. I want an iPad for every Senior within WiFi range, all over the globe. I envision lonely seniors becoming "Pen Pals" through FaceTime, all over the world. I will be 70 in September and I'm excited about it. I feel it gives me access to the demographic

I want to serve. I am new to Social Media but I have great help to learn this new way to communicate and I welcome you coming along with me on my journey to help Seniors everywhere, "Rock The Magic Of Technology". Sharon

"TOO MANY PEOPLE, WHEN THEY GET OLD, THINK THAT THEY HAVE TO LIVE BY THE CALENDAR." .- John Glenn (1921-2016)

"As the oldest person to board a U.S. Space Shuttle at age 77, Senator John Glenn exemplified the view that we shouldn't let age define us. The calendar is a useful way to let you know the date, but if you let yourself be hemmed in by your chronological age, you may lock yourself out of potentially valuable opportunities." --Susan Krauss Whitbourne Ph.D.

Hi Everyone,

If you wanted to see the total eclipse but couldn’t for what ever reason…come with me and my husband while we take a fast trip (31 hours) up to the Boise National Forrest where we could be in the dead center of the “Path of Totality”. It was absolutely an amazing trip and I’m so glad I let my husband talk me into doing such a crazy thing like driving to Idaho and back in less than two days. But it was worth it. I hope you enjoy my video of the experience.---Sharon Beck

Mac-Senior and the Great Eclipse News Letters, Sharon’s Senior Blog Hi Everyone, It was my husbands dream to go to the path of totality to see the Eclipse and I wanted to support him by going along. But it wasn’t on my “Bucket List to drive 11 hours or more depending on whether you could believe the...

INDEPENDENT LIVING in the FUTURE - SENIORS PREFER ROBOTS!
USA Today wrote on 8/23/17 that "63% of Millennial parents would rather have artificial intelligence (with robots) help them in their golden years--not their kids!"
However, when it comes to technology help for Apple devices, seniors prefer easy-to-navigate tutorials. Take a look at mac-senior.com for free, friendly and very human help! Post by Pat

WHAT'S COMING NEXT IN iPHONES?
I was curious about the new iPhone 8. scheduled to be released in a month. What will the features be? What will be different? On www.macrumors.com, I got closer to some answers:

"The iPhone 8 is expected to feature a radical redesign, with an edge-to-edge display that does away with the top and bottom bezels where features like the Touch ID fingerprint sensor and the front-facing camera are housed. Instead, rumors suggest Touch ID will either be built into the display or eliminated entirely in favor of facial recognition technology, which Apple is confirmed to be working on. Either way, there will be no physical Home button on the iPhone 8 and no bezels aside from a small area for the front-facing camera." They may be rumors but it's enough to create a lot of industry buzz!

NEW TERM FOR SMART PHONE USERS
Have you heard of "Phubbing"? It's a combination of the words Phone and Snubbing. A recent Parade Magazine article gives an example of "having dinner with a companion who spends more time on his/her smartphone than talking to you." According to a survey by the American Psychological Assoc., "86% of adults say they constantly check their email, texts and social media accounts." Are we adults are as guilty of Phubbing as our children and grandchildren? I wonder what would happen if we had more more face-to-face conversations?

Q&A #5 – HOW TO USE FACETIME ON YOUR APPLE DEVICE by Sharon Beck

FaceTime has been one of the most wonderful inventions for Seniors that Apple has ever come up with, I think! It allows grandparents, who live far away from the sweet grandchildren (or anyone, really), to see and talk to them as though they are in the same room. If you’ve wondered how to use FaceTime, I hope you will watch this video and share it with others.

3 WAYS TO CONTINUE LEARNING. French writer, Marcel Proust, considered to be one of the most influential authors of the 20th Century, had amazing insight when he wrote: “The real voyage of discovery consists not in seeking new lands, but in seeing with new eyes.”
In their blog, the people at the Ohio retirement community, Kendal at Oberlin, list some “eye opening” ideas about continuous education in 3 easy steps. (1) Take a college course, (2) Make music, (3) Try yoga or tai chi. More at: http://blog.kao.kendal.org/3-ways-to-continue-learning-in-retirement

It’s not uncommon for older adults to seek opportunities for lifelong education. The benefits of learning continue throughout our lives.

ARE YOU GROWING YOUR MIND?
Knowledge is the key to power. PIckthebrain.com has a great quote: “Every mind was made for growth, for knowledge, and its nature is sinned against when it is doomed to ignorance”- William Ellery Channing." Powerful words!

One way to grow your mind is to stay connected through technology. Do you have an Apple device that is not being used—or not used to its potential? Go to mac-senior.com, sign up for our Newsletter and “start growing” with our Free video tutorials.

APPS FOR SENIORS
Thanks to research at Sunrise Senior Living, we learned that there are a number of new apps of interest to all ages. Here are a few we could all use:

1. The Weather Channel – The Weather App, already on your iPhone, comes from this channel. Receive forecasts, current conditions and maps. You may want to check other cities as well. As seen in the previous post (but bears repeating), our very own Sharon Beck of mac.senior.com has a new video to assist with using the Apple Weather app. Learn how to view the weather worldwide by viewing this link: http://mac-senior.com/…/apple-qa-adding-cities-to-apples-w…/

2. Nook – “Read dozens of your favorite novels on one device with the Nook app. The Nook app allows you to travel with all of your latest reads without the extra weight.”

3. Skype – “Connect with your family members and close friends with your Skype app. This app makes staying in touch with loved ones from long distances a simple task.”
