03/21 - at the 21st chromosome, there is a third replication instead of a pair of genes - this is how a person has the genetic alteration commonly referred to as “Down Syndrome” aka “Trisomy 21.”

Happy World Down Syndrome Day!

Today is World Down Syndrome Day — and we are proud to stand together with our partners the National Down Syndrome Society and the Down's Syndrome Association. 💙🩷

This year's theme — Together Against Loneliness — has touched something deep. People with Down syndrome and their families around the world have told us: this is our story. This is what we live. And this is what we want to change.

Loneliness is not just a feeling. It is a human rights issue. And together, our network of 160+ organisations across the globe is committed to making real change happen — so that every person with Down syndrome feels included, valued, and truly connected.

Today, we celebrate our community. And we renew our commitment to a world where no one is left out. 💛

Together Against Loneliness. Together for change.

Black disabled leaders have always shaped history, even when history failed to recognize them.

From voting rights and civil rights to disability justice, LGBTQ+ liberation and education, Black disabled leaders helped build movements that expanded access, opportunity and participation for millions. Too often, their disabilities are erased from the story, or their contributions are overlooked altogether.

At NDI, we believe disability inclusion is essential to understanding our shared history and to building an economy that works for everyone.

We’d love to hear from you. Tell us in the comments about Black disabled leaders who inspire you or whose stories you value.

Fannie Lou Hamer (1917–1977) is identified as having mobility impairment, chronic pain and vision loss, and as a powerful advocate for voting rights, economic justice and health equity. Brad Lomax (1950–1984), who had multiple sclerosis, is described as a key organizer who helped bridge the Black civil rights and disability rights movements. Audre Lorde (1934–1992), who lived with cancer and chronic illness, is described as a poet, essayist and activist who shaped feminist, Black liberation, LGBTQ+ and disability justice movements. Barbara Jordan (1936–1996), who had multiple sclerosis, is described as a trailblazing lawyer, educator and politician.

You may be hearing about Medicaid work reporting and wondering what it actually means. A new law allows states to require some adults who have Medicaid health coverage to report work or community activities in the future.

Nothing is changing right now, and any changes would happen at the state level over the next few years.

We created a plain language guide that explains who may need to report, who should not, and what steps you can take now to protect your Medicaid.

Please read and share this with anyone who uses Medicaid or helps someone who does. Information like this can help people keep their health care.
