Since deer season is kicking off here in the Lowcountry, now is a good time to share how to properly cape your deer for shoulder mounts. We got an influx of deer last season with the brisket and legs cut too short, some of the worst offenders were outfitters and “the guy that does it for everyone” at the club. Always stop your cuts at the sternum, leave us 6-8” behind the legs depending on what kind of mount you want, follow the line where white hair meets brown on the back of the legs and connect it to the belly cut. We can always remove what we don’t need but it’s hard to add and it’s hard to sew up a cut brisket. Of course we suggest using Grand Strand Processing if you’re not confident or just want top quality processing!

Old warrior buck for Haywood Brandon. This old deer was covered in scars from fighting, was missing an eye and even had a snake bite on his face when he was harvested. We chose to put a blind eye back in place of the missing eye and rebuilt a broken brow tine. An Aggressive posture pose was the only thing appropriate.
