It's On Us Corvallis

It's On Us Corvallis We aim to build community and help the local economy through food. Our mission is to build community and help the economy through food.

IOU was founded in April, 2020 and is a volunteer project of the Corvallis Sustainability Coalition Food Action Team. It’s On Us Corvallis pays local restaurants to make meals for the community. By directing donated funds to purchase meals from local restaurants, IOU Corvallis supports local businesses and creates a multiplier effect in the local economy. IOU Corvallis is not an emergency food pro

gram. We do not support the idea of "need". We are all in need of a gift, and we are all able to give. IOU Corvallis encourages you to pay it forward when you are able, however you are able.

Thank you for an amazing three years! It's On Us Corvallis started as a response to the COVID-19 pandemics' effects on our local economy and community well-being. COVID-19 continues to circulate, small businesses and households have not fully recovered, and we all could still use a gift.

However, we have gifted all of our funding this year. We may continue to fundraise, but in the meantime we will not be doing weekly drawings.

We hope we created a community that doesn't ask "are you in need?" but instead gives freely, without qualifications, because we are all in need of something.

Stay tuned for future events and thank you to the Corvallis Sustainability Coalition for their support of this project!

Who decides need?

We don't want to be the judge of someone else's level of need. We don’t agree with existing measurements of need because we don't think they fully account for individuals' unique experience. Other food-aid programs use need proxies like low income, hours worked, or housing status to determine need. We don’t think there is a way to measure the need for a gift and we encourage anyone who wants a gift to ask for one from IOU Corvallis - and pay it forward when they are able.

Let's show some love for 2022! What do you find most interesting!?

Here's the year in review:
🍽 1,048 individuals got one or more gift cards this year
✅ 51 locally owned restaurants, coffee shops, farmers market vendors, and the cooperatively owned grocery store were paid to provide free food
✨ Gift cards were used 4,460 times. Each card could be used at multiple locations, for example a $50 gift card could be used to buy $30 of groceries at the farmers' market and then $20 of a take-out meal at a restaurant
♻️ $69,740 was recirculated into the local economy.

Most folks used their gift cards at dinner time, from 5pm-6pm. The second most popular times to get food were from 4-5pm and from 6-8pm. Makes sense!

Coffee shops were popular on Saturday morning (we all deserve to relax a bit on the weekend!).
Restaurants were popular on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday (we all need a break from cooking then!)
The grocery store was most popular on Wednesday and Sunday. Checks out!

Finally, about $20,000 went unused in gift cards. If we were using paper gift cards or didn't have a way to recapture that funding, that money would be lost. We are super grateful to use Kuto.app so we can recapture unspent funding and recirculate it back as gift cards. No penny is wasted in this program!

Many thanks to the Corvallis Sustainability Coalition for their volunteer support and to the First Alternative Natural Foods Co-op for their enthusiastic support of spreading good, local food to everyone. Thank you.

Finally, thank you to our amazing donors!

Whew! We took some time off in January but we have some numbers for you! $5,364.39 was recirculated into the local economy in December by 117 unique households. That's amazing.

First Alternative Natural Foods Co-op is again the most popular place to spend IOU funding, meaning you all are getting groceries from our only local, cooperatively owned grocery store. The second most popular place is Cascade BBQ, followed by Tacos El Machin, Queen's Chopstick, and BRASSMONKEY. You are all making great local choices!

Thank you for your pay it forward spirit.

Wow, what a November! $10,356.52 was recirculated into the local economy this month. An all-time high number of people used the program: 481!

A HUGE thanks to Ten Rivers Food Web for inviting us to host a $10,000 giveaway at their Fill Your Pantry event on November 6th. It snowed the entire time and was so much fun! Thanks to Kuto.app and Corvallis-Albany Farmers' Markets for their help managing the technology and for providing a non-smartphone way to gift funds.

You all help local food business owners, farms, and the locally owned grocery store with each gift card used. We also recirculated $1,908.27 in expired gift cards. That's money that, because we are using electronic and not paper gift cards, we can gift again. Thank you!
