My high schooler wanted to test different kinds of composts and how well they supported veggie gardens for his biology class.

For his experiment, he mixed 1 part compost/manure, 1 part vermiculite and 1 part peat moss.

Bagged potting soil was used as a control.

He built 1 foot x 1 foot cedar beds for each compost mixture (plus one for the control) and planted 12 radish seeds in each.

Not only did the chicken manure mix have the best germination rate but the radishes were WAY bigger.

When he was designing this experiment, I was actually worried there wouldn’t be a significant difference between the chicken manure, steer manure or mushroom composts.

I’m not surprised chicken manure did well. But I AM surprised the other manure types did so poorly.

He used bagged chicken manure from the store for this experiment but if you use fresh chicken manure, be sure to let it sit for 6-12 months before adding to your garden.
