Excellence. I’ve never won an annual award in the military before yesterday. Annual awards are a competitive process driven by measured accomplishments across various areas which are objectively focused on evaluating well-rounded contributions, and subjectively evaluated for overall leadership performance.

I received the 2024 Commander’s Excellence Award. It’s an honor. When I thought about 2024 and what I “did,” I didn’t think through a task list. In fact, my word for 2024 was “intentional.” I wanted to be intentional about my time, my activities, my associations, my focus, etc. I wanted to invest purposefully. I enjoy being a part of teams; I enjoy building teams; I enjoy building leaders. I was intentional about doing each of those things.

In 2024, I was intentional about executing my skill set. I found that I was more encouraged as a visionary, resolved issues in a timely manner, advocated for my teammates concerns, and helped others to grow as leaders.

I realized that I deliver excellence when I am intentionally doing my part.

“You can’t lead with a 1,000-mile screwdriver,” is a lesson I learned through failure. I took over as the leader of a new-to-me team. Immediately after, I went on long-term military duty. I had a person serving in the number two role, but I didn’t know him. Also, I didn’t know the members of my leadership team. I knew the culture I wanted to build, and the administrative foundation I believed was necessary. So, while I was a thousand miles away I attempted to drive that culture.

It was disastrous. It was disastrous because rules without relationship breed rebellion. I didn’t have the time or brain space to articulate my “why,” and there was only so much credit you could ask for because of your position. My team was still forming and norming, and I rushed everyone into the storming phase. I was asking them to choose between following my legal/moral/ethical, but new-to-them demands, which quickly devolved into “irrational demands.”

The leader who shared the opening quote was encouraging me to think through the inability to drive fine details from miles away. He was reminding me that I needed to trust my team. I discovered that nothing was lost in waiting to connect with my teammates.

This time around, in joining the Indiana team, I’ve learned my lesson. I asked Ashleigh Presnar to be my Chief of Staff, and she uprooted her life to move to Indiana and serve Hoosiers alongside me. As I’ve been on military orders in DC, she has led our team in Indianapolis. Her decisions have been sound, and she’s been faithful to highlight the decisions that only I can make.

She’s a trusted teammate and I’m thankful she’s on our team. Shout out to AP; thanks for leading in my stead!

Upcoming content delivery will focus on lessons considered while building a new team. Battle-Proven Leadership CEO Jennifer-Ruth Green has the honor of serving as the inaugural Secretary of Public Safety for the State of Indiana. Creating a team from siloed organizations whose Venn diagram of responsibility crossed at times, is easily done on paper, but building the necessary framework for cohesion is required. Also, as a leader walking into a group of organizations where you are the link to and from the Governor can make you a cog or a catalyst. It’s wiser to be the latter.

Follow her here to see how she to create the trust required of a team. She’ll share her thoughts. In the meantime, meet the Indiana Public Safety Secretariat.

I read that it takes a person 7.6 times to hear something before the message sticks.

Today I packed 50 books for delivery tomorrow to a client whose team will read them ahead of my upcoming Battle-Proven Leadership training seminar.

I want the info I share to stick, and I don’t want my session to be the first time someone has heard the info. Clients receive their books ahead of time, so their teams can better absorb the info.
