Mississippi State Extension says cattle typically spend 5 to 9 hours a day ruminating. After a good grazing bout she lies down, brings that grass back up a wad at a time, chews it again, mixes it with saliva, and swallows it for round two in the rumen. That re-chewing is what lets her get feed out of grass and hay that we couldn't digest at all.

A cow that's quit chewing her cud is one worth a second look. Stress and sickness cut rumination time, so a calm, cud-chewing herd laid up in the shade is a good sign.

October is Beef Month in Alabama! 🐂🍂

For 62 years, Alabama has set aside October to honor the cattle families who make this industry what it is. They're up before daylight checking cows, cutting and hauling hay, doctoring calves and fixing fence. Nobody's clapping for it, but they keep showing up because they love the land and the livestock.

This month, we're tipping our hats to every Alabama cattleman and cattlewoman keeping this tradition strong. Thank you for all you do. 🇺🇸
