For folks outside the industry — AIA is the American Institute of Architects, and being part of the Dallas chapter keeps us connected to the architects and design pros we work alongside every day. It matters to us to be part of that community, not just a name on an invoice.

People ask what a scan day actually looks like. Honestly? A lot of walking.

We show up to a commercial building and, instead of setting up a tripod every ten feet like the old days, we walk the whole space with the scanner capturing as we go. Every room, every corner, ceiling to floor. A building that used to take a crew two days to measure by hand, we can capture in a few hours.

Then the real work starts back at the office — turning all those millions of points into clean drawings, models, and renderings our clients can open and use.

Ever watched someone try to measure a 40,000 sq ft warehouse with a tape measure and a clipboard? We have. It takes days, and there's always a number that comes back wrong.

Here's the honest version: hand-measuring an existing building is slow, and small errors stack up fast. One bad dimension early and everything downstream inherits it.

We use LiDAR instead. The scanner captures millions of points and gives us the whole building at ±5mm accuracy — walls, columns, ceiling heights, the stuff a tape measure skips because nobody wants to climb up there. Then we turn that into drawings you can actually use.

Time to give some credit where it's due — a shout-out to Jose, our lead drafter.

Jose does the heavy lifting on our 2D and 3D plans, renderings, all of it. Most of the time he's behind the scenes at the office, turning point cloud data into drawings our clients can actually use. He's a Garland local and one of the hardest workers I know.

Every so often we need to get out and verify existing drawings against the real building for a client, and Jose's always the first to grab his boots and come help.

A company is only as good as its people, and we're lucky to have him. Thanks for everything you do, Jose.

Behind the scenes of running a small business: sometimes it means lying flat on a warehouse floor to get the right shot for a social post.

That's me on the ground and Jose our Lead Drafter behind the camera.

Here's what the big firms don't always get. When you're a small, family-owned shop, you wear every hat. One minute I'm scanning a building, the next I'm the marketing department flat on my back trying to make us look halfway decent online. Nobody's handing me a content team.

But honestly, I'll take it. Every bit of this is ours — the work, the reputation, the effort to get our name out there across DFW. You don't build that by outsourcing it. You build it by showing up and getting a little dirty.

You might hear us throw around the term "point cloud." Here's what it actually means, minus the jargon.

When we scan a building, the LiDAR captures millions of individual points — each one an exact measurement of a real surface. Put them all together and you get a point cloud: a full 3D copy of the building, accurate down to millimeters, that we can spin around, measure, and pull drawings from.

Think of it like a photograph you can take measurements off of — except instead of a flat picture, it's the entire building in three dimensions.

That's the raw material. From there we turn it into the floor plans, models, and renderings you actually work with.

People are sometimes surprised a plumber ended up running LiDAR scanners for commercial buildings.

But it makes sense if you think about it. Fourteen years in the trades taught me how buildings actually go together — and how often the drawings don't match what got built. This technology just lets me capture that gap with millimeter accuracy instead of a tape measure and a best guess.

Same goal I've always had on a job site: give people information they can actually trust. Just better tools now.

This is my favorite before-and-after in the whole business.

On the left: the raw 3D scan — millions of points we capture walking a building with the NavVis MLX. Looks like chaos, but every single dot is a real measurement.

On the right: what we actually hand you. A clean, dimensioned floor plan of the space exactly as it stands today — not how it looked on some drawing from 1985.

That's the whole job. Capture reality, turn it into something your team can build off of. Right here in DFW, most projects back in your hands in 5-10 days.

HosScans was out in the field this week verifying demo and new wall construction at a client's property. 📐

This is where the work gets real — confirming what's coming down and what's going up matches the plan, before anyone's guessing on site.

And it ties right into the news we've been hinting at. HosScans already verifies existing structures and brings SPS designs to life — and we're about to take a big step further into the construction side of things.

People sometimes ask why a guy with 14 years in the trades ended up running LiDAR scanners.

Honest answer: it's the same job, better tools.

Every year I spent on job sites — reading prints, tracing systems, figuring out why the drawing didn't match the wall in front of me — taught me how buildings actually get built. Not how they were drawn. How they end up.

That's exactly what an as-built is supposed to capture. So when I scan a commercial building, I'm not just pointing a scanner and exporting data. I'm reading the building the way I always have — I just hand you something far more accurate at the end of it.

The tech is impressive. But it's the field experience behind it that makes the deliverable something you can actually trust.

That's the whole reason HosScans exists.
