Reflect on the year with employees

As time passes, it’s important to reflect on the year with employees. What was learned? What mistakes were made? What successes were celebrated? What are the tools used that will help us carry forward more productively?

It’s easy to let time fly by us and get engrossed in our day-to-day lives. But if we don’t periodically reflect on what brought us to this day in time, we may lose the opportunity to truly develop and grow based on our shared experiences.

Businesses often conduct reviews after project completion to analyze what went well and what went wrong. This enables us to look for continuous improvement without assessing blame. We need to do the same with our time and invite our employees to brainstorm with us to build a cohesive analysis.

Give your employees a voice and expectation for participation. Ask each to come up with a list of two to three items to discuss from the past 12 months. They should have both positive and negative examples and be able to discuss what they learned from the experience. This is a great opportunity to help your staff with analysis, looking at an outcome and gaining insight into the strategy of why you do what you do.

We have multiple opportunities to learn and help our staff develop. We need to make sure we’re taking these chances and using them. Investing time and effort in your employees and helping them learn new skills and will help with retention, productivity and morale.

And it’s the right thing to do!
