Be the Palm Tree in the Storm. Life has a way of bringing storms -unexpected setbacks, disappointments, and challenges- that shake us to the core. In those moments, it’s easy to feel like you have to fight the wind with all your strength. But the truth is, lasting strength doesn’t come from resisting, it comes from staying flexible.

Think of the palm tree in a hurricane. Other trees may snap under the force of the storm, but the palm bends, sways, and yields to the wind. It doesn’t lose its roots. When the storm passes, it stands tall again, often stronger than before.

Our challenges don’t define us, how we respond to them does. Flexibility doesn’t mean weakness, it means having the wisdom to adjust, adapt, and move forward without losing who you are at your core.

I offer you a nugget from my own life experiences…you are not fragile, you are rooted and you can bend without breaking.

Reflection Questions:

What challenge in your life right now is calling you to be more flexible?

How can you remind yourself that bending is not the same as breaking?

Absolutely, it's all in your control! The questions to ask yourself are:

-Am I feeling defeated or developed?

-How do I want to feel?

-What might I experiment with doing differently to create this feeling/more of this feeling?

-When will I get started?

-What else might I need to assist in my experiment?

"Life is a series of problem-solving opportunities. The problems you face will either defeat you or develop you depending on how you respond to them." - Rick Warren

Maybe it's the spaces, maybe it's not!

It's true that sometimes the 'spaces' can be the source of the problem. However, when we flip the coin and perform a bit of self introspection what we may find is the 'spaces' in which we exist are actually symptoms of the problem, symptoms of the actual root issue. What we may discover is that we are the source of the challenge, we are creating the obstacle.

Let's face it, the flip side of the coin can be a hard pill to swallow but the common denominator of the 'spaces' in which you exist is 'you'. And if the root of the challenge, the true source of the obstacle lies within, it will be unconsciously carried into every space in which you exist. The 'spaces' can be changed but until the root issue is addressed the 'spaces' will continuously manage to become cluttered, so to speak.

Address the true source and most often the 'spaces' (or at least how you perceive the spaces) will adjust accordingly.

What might you need to address?

Leaders dedicated to making extraordinary things happen are open to receiving ideas from anyone and anywhere. They are adept at using their out-sight to survey the landscape of technology, politics, economics, demographics, art, religion, and society in search of new ideas.

They are prepared to search for opportunities to address the constant shifts in their organization's environment. Moreover, because they are proactive, they don't just ride the waves of change: they make the waves that others ride. They are prepared to seize the initiative and address the constant shifts in the organization's environment.

You don't have to change history, but you do have to change business-as-usual thinking. You have to be proactive, continually inviting and creating new initiatives. Be on the lookout for anything that lulls you or your colleagues into a false sense of security. Change, innovation, and leadership are nearly synonymous. This means that your focus is less on the routine operations and much more on the untested and untried. Keep in mind that the most innovative ideas are often not your own nor from your organization. They're elsewhere, and the best leaders look all around them for the places in which breakthrough ideas are hiding.

They ask questions and seek advice. Exemplary leadership requires outsight, not just insight. The quest for change is an adventure. It tests your will and your skill. It's tough, but it's also stimulating. Adversity introduces you to yourself. To get the best from yourself and others, you must understand what gives meaning and purpose to your work. -The Leadership Challenge

Facts and Attitudes

Any fact facing us is not as important as our attitude toward it, for that determines our success or failure.

The way you think about a fact may defeat you before you ever do anything about it. You are overcome by the fact because you think you are. - Norman Vincent Peale

What are the facts in your life toward which you may need to re-evaluate your attitude?

Appreciating Emotions as Important to Growth

When we come to understand our emotional reactions, we better understand ourselves.

Most of us were brought up to believe some emotions are negative and bad.

I like feeling happy as much as anyone. I'm more productive when my mood is bright. I'm easier to be with when I'm hopeful about tomorrow.

I have also made big changes in my life through the power of my anger, realized the depth of my courage when feeling my fear, and learned what is important in life through my sorrow.

-Marcia Reynolds, Coach the Person not the Problem

“Be brave enough to live life creatively. The creative is the place where no one else has ever been. You have to leave the city of your comfort and go into the wilderness of your intuition. You can’t get there by bus, only by hard work and risk and by not quite knowing what you’re doing. What you’ll discover will be wonderful. What you’ll discover will be yourself.”

-Carla Harris (adapted from Lisa Fraser’s 2017 Black Enterprise article, Powerful Quotes From Black Women Bosses on International Women’s Day)

I can’t stress enough how much learning this lesson about perception has impacted my career…

The perception that exists about you in the marketplace will be a function of two things. First, there is your self-presentation, or what you are putting out in the marketplace about yourself. Second, add to that the impression people have about you based on the experiences they have had with people with similar characteristics or who look like you - what I call the baggage of the beholder, or what they bring from previous experiences.

It is important that you are cognizant of your behavior, speech, and dress, particularly in the workplace, because it is the foundation of the perceptions about who you are. - Carla Harris, Expect to Win
