Famed Texas landscape painter Porfirio Salinas painted far more than the iconic bluebonnet scene. 🌵 His striking paintings of prickly pear cacti were undoubtedly inspired by the artists who came before him in early Texas art.

Throughout the 1920s, the annual Davis Competition showcased paintings featuring native Texas wildflowers, including the blooming prickly pear cactus. Renowned artists such as Jose Arpa, Robert Wood, and Dawson Dawson-Watson exhibited memorable views of Texas cacti that would later influence the work of Salinas.

The lasting legacy of Texas wildflower and landscape painting owes much to the prestigious Davis Competition, which elevated these scenes and established a standard for future Texas artists. The competition set the standard for Texas artists moving forward, inspiring Salinas and other young painters and helped to make wildflower paintings the most sought-after subject for traditionalist Texas collectors.

This exceptional Porfirio Salinas work was sold last year at the Lone Star Art Auction for $48,000, and we can’t wait to see how Salinas performs at our upcoming auction this fall! 🎨

According to an essay by art historian Emily Ballew Neff, Julian Onderdonk’s paintings are far more than simply beautiful images - they offer an alternative vision of the Texas myth. 🎨

Rather than portraying the rugged, dusty image of West Texas that had become a national stereotype, Onderdonk captured the lush, understated beauty of the Texas Hill Country. As Neff notes, writers such as J. Frank Dobie dismissed this softer landscape as being associated “with sensitivity…contrary to the rough-and-ready Western qualities” central to Texas mythology.

“In the Boerne Hills - Southwest Texas” beautifully demonstrates Onderdonk’s sensitivity to the natural world through his refined Impressionistic technique. Soft light and loose brushwork give an ethereal quality to what otherwise could have been a harsh, dry Texas landscape.

We were proud to sell this impressive 20 x 30 oil on canvas for $240,000 in our 2022 Lone Star Art Auction.

Our 2022 Lone Star Art Auction sold this beautiful E. Martin Hennings oil on canvas “The Wagon Road,” for $180,000. 🎨

Hennings saw himself primarily as a figure painter, yet he could not resist the allure of the New Mexico landscape. As he acknowledged, “New Mexico has almost made a landscape painter out of me, although I believe my strongest work is in figures.”

By blending his focus on the human form with the natural beauty of the Southwest, Hennings developed a distinctive style that set him apart from other members of the Taos Society of Artists. The result was serene compositions that captured a quiet harmony between people and the land.

Van Deren Coke noted that “Hennings' most pleasant pictures are those which intertwine nature with Indians in a subtle tapestrylike manner to suggest the unification of man and his landscape,” beautifully exemplified here in “The Wagon Road,” painted in Taos during the 1940s.

Known mainly for his moonlight painting technique, Frank Tenney Johnson was also adept at painting compelling daytime scenes in a style utilizing knives, fingers, and brushes. "The Lawless Frontier" presented here and painted by the artist in 1930 is a testament to his remarkable skill as a painter. A rare daytime action scene by the artist, this incredible painting was originally purchased directly from the Biltmore Art Gallery circa 1930 by a Montana ranching family and resided in their family collection until 2023.

Our 2025 Lone Star Art Auction sold this stunning piece for $234,000. 🎨

Texas artist David Bates explored floral themes throughout his career, noting “I don’t really think of them as still lifes so much as portraits of flowers.”

In a monograph of Bates’s work, Justin Spring writes that Bates’ flowers “are among the most hefty and energized in the history of American painting. They are also among the most playful; in many instances they seem to possess all the charm of a well-loved pet.” This can be seen in “Purple Violets;” each flower seems to have its own personality as it faces the viewer.

Bates drew significant attention last fall, and 2026 is gearing up to be another success! 🎨

G. Harvey’s Western scenes are the artist’s most evocative; “The Warmth of Friendships” is a snapshot of a quiet moment among old friends at the end of a cold day. Notable is the Texaco gas pump alongside the horses; a nod to the old and new West overlapping.

“As a child, I would spend hours listening to my father talk of the ranch life and frontier days of Texas,” G. Harvey said. “My paintings have never been literal representations. They are part firsthand experience and part dreams generated by my dad’s stories.”

Having sold at auction in 2025 for $120,000, we can’t wait to see what 2026 results will bring!

Artist Tom Ryan recollects the memory of his famous painting, “The Big Gather (Four Sixes)”:

“The year is 1968. George had informed me that there was going to be a big gathering of cattle in the Pitchfork Flats area on the 6666 Ranch. This would be the last opportunity to participate in a large gathering of cattle to be worked in the old ways. To do a painting in the scope of “The Big Gather” would take weeks of work, therefore I was as thorough as possible, giving my utmost attention to every activity that transpired…

As I rode over to Pitchfork Flats, I was beginning to feel the excitement of “The Big Gather”. The first bunches of cattle had come in from the closer holding pens. Cowboys had surrounded and were holding these cattle as another drive was coming off the mesa in the distance. Yet another bunch was coming in from the opposite direction and other drives would be coming in shortly. The working of over twenty-five hundred head of cattle would be commencing within the hour. Witnessing top cutting horses and cowboys do their chores in a herd of this immense proportion is a rare sight to behold. "

We are grateful to have had the opportunity to include this 24 x 48 oil on board in our 2024 Lone Star Art Auction, and even more excited to sell the painting for $168,000.

San Antonio native and American Impressionist Julian Onderdonk is best known for his signature bluebonnets and paintings of the Texas countryside. One of the first Texas artists to popularize the now-ubiquitous Texas bluebonnet scene, his success inspired generations of artists to follow in his footsteps to capture the natural beauty of their home state in the spring.

“Twilight in the Hills, Blue-Bonnets", a 8x 10 oil on canvasboard Impressionistic Texas landscape, combines the classically trained artist’s technique of atmospheric perspective while staying true to the natural wonders of the Lone Star State, and sold in our most recent auction for $90,500.
