What is an ENERGY BROKER... and why should you care?
The primary function of a commercial energy broker is to help businesses control energy costs.
The number one strategy brokers use is tracking retail energy prices so they can identify opportunities to save money when prices dip.
Energy prices fluctuate every second of the day and in deregulated markets you can choose when to lock in your price.
So the key is to always be tracking the price of your next contract, and identify low points so you can save money or at a minimum mitigate price increases.
Energy brokers generate competitive bids, help identify the right supplier, the right contract structure and the right term length.
When an energy broker helps a business procure a contract, they earn a commission for every unit of energy consumed during the term of that contract.
So for example, with an electricity contract, brokers earn a few tenths of a penny per kilowatt hour consumed each month by their clients.
What’s really cool about energy right now is there’s an explosion of maturing technology that’s giving brokers a bunch of new tools and strategies to control energy costs.
Stuff like solar, energy storage, and distributed generation. In my opinion, these technologies will massively transform the way businesses manage and consume energy in the coming decade and energy brokers will be the ones who bring these solutions to businesses.
