As a piano technician I get great satisfaction from being able to leave an instrument beautifully tuned and the touch refined.
Arriving to tune a piano that hasn't been serviced in many years, I'm genuinely excited to tell the family pianist (or the parents of a student) that they'll without question practice much more.
Why? An out-of-tune instrument turns what should be an enjoyable, rewarding experience into something frustrating and unpleasant, which quickly kills motivation—especially for kids just starting out. I explain they will practice far more eagerly because the piano finally sounds good and inviting again. Parents can be a bit skeptical prior to tuning, but the difference to parents and children alike is noticeable immediately!
I received this text from a parent the day after I tuned their piano that hadn't been serviced in well over 10 years.
..Thanks for taking care of our piano (yesterday). My daughter experienced a significant difference in the way it sounds now...she practiced for 2 straight hours on that day and since then has been using it a lot more than her usual practice time. In fact, she is playing it right now as I type...thanks again!
